Anyone else obsessed with “covering all bases?”

If I were to be 100% honest with myself, I really only need two knives (maybe three) for my everyday context: food prep, general utility, and maybe a mid-sized folder for EDC. That’s it really.

But then I gotta have this for chopping. And this for “bushcrafting” (whatever that means to ya). And this for fighting. And this for parties. And this for traveling. And this for one-upping the only other knife guy within 100 miles of my house.

I used to be, but it was all just excuses to buy more knives and it often ended up with me buying knives I didn't particularly want and wasn't going to carry or use very often. Then I ditched the excuses and just embraced buying knives because I like knives. Been much more satisfied with my purchases ever since I decided to stop rationalizing them and fulfilling imagined needs and instead just bought the knives I want.

I don't know if "obsessed" is the right word, but I'm definitely appropriately prepared. I always have my "main" EDC, which is typically a Kershaw Launch 11, Leek, Bareknuckle, or Spyderco Delica. I have a serrated Dragonfly H1 hawkbill for "dirty" work (usually wet/greasy stuff at work), I have boxcutter (Magnus SlideClick) for cutting boxes (duh), my Victorinox Cybertool 29 (I swapped the Posidrive/flathead bit with a T6/T7), and then a Squirt PS4 on my keychain. If I'm biking then a Leatherman Charge XTi is in my backpack (plus some basic bike tools). Plus a GEC or Case for sentimentality or for use in sensitive company.,

My daily life is entirely urban, so that stuff pretty much covers anything that wouldn't require a 30lb toolbox.

Know your bases, cover them with the right tools. Job done. And don't forget some additional knives just for the love. I could add that yesterday I had to go to a high security place (embassy). So, I very carefully emptied all my pockets to leave any knife at home... I was amazed that I ended up with five knives on the table ! "You're nuts !" I thought (very briefly). But I kept (or forgot...) the Spyderco Bug on my keyring. Turned out there was no metal detector, they were only keen on the virus. Hydroalcoholic gel, mask and all that. And, yes, pics or it didn't happen, here is yesterday's knives pocket dump :

I tried carrying a bunch of stuff on my body, but they get to heavy and creates a signature, I don't like to be notice. So I trim down my EDC to whatever-that-would-keep-me-alive-until-I-can-get-the-big-guns, and I keep my bigger knives, edc gears in a backpack or on the motorbike.

I had all bases covered by the time I was 12 years old. I’ve spent the next 40 years trying to update or find something better and buying spares.

Truth is I should have stopped unless something broke or wore out.

At twelve I had a SAK, a Camillus 72, Buck 110,& aKA-BAR. I was set for life.

But you have to have a hobby. Buy what you like and enjoy the variety.

I like to carry a fancy one, that looks good, used only for delicate tasks, along with one that I don't mind scratching up if I need to cut something a bit more substantial.

Same. I have finally gotten to the point that I realize that I am going to get more enjoyment and pride of ownership out of one $500 knife than I will ten $50 knives. Buy once, cry once.

Usually 2 blades, flashlight, Leatherman Crunch and I'm covered for a regular work day.

I like having a wide variety to choose from and trying different materials, sizes, etc.. like most people here I have way more than I need. I've done pretty well on not impulse buying the last few months as what I've got I'm pretty happy with. Still got a few on order for 2022...
