Am I an oddball (other than for the obvious reasons) in that the HI khukuris are the only knives I buy?

These days I only but HIs as well. When I started knife collecting ten years or so ago I bought different types of fixed bladed knives. Then I found HI and it was downhill from there...;)

Yeah, that's really weird! (-:

I was buying knives for years before I found HI, but soon abandoned 90% of my other spending on everything else to collect these. (Not 90% of knives, 90% of _everything_.) Most of my purchases are still HI, but I buy folders and fixed blades and ocassional larger knives from other places from time to time.

So what is the attraction? Simple. I have a dozen knives on my list to get, from SOG's and Randalls to Sebenza's. But all of those knives will probably be available down the road, even years from now. Even in the unlikely event that SOG or Randall or Chris Reeve went out of business, there would still be thousands of their knives on the after market.

But each HI knife is a totally unique creation. What almost broke me was the incorrect assumption that I could eventually get every model in every size and variation with every handle material. That is impossible. You would have to buy almost every single DOTD for several years to make that happen, and it soon becomes an exercise in futility and there is no joy in it anyway.

Now I am morphing all of those buys into a unique collection that just has the prized items I really want to display and use.

I used to worry that I had to hurry to get these as I didn't know how long they would be around, but the new models and all the great variations indicate to me that the future looks very bright.

The great thing about HI is that 10 guys could each buy like crazy and at the end of a year have 100 knives each to show for their efforts, and when comparing their collections they would each have a majority of totally unique and diverse items.

So far I only bought one HI kukri. I will get at least one more. But I still need folders and other types of fixed blade knives, so I need to spead out my shopping.

My collection is mostly folders. I have several fixed blades too, but folders are easier to hide/store. I also now have two KH khukuris. But now I don't see myself buying any other knives than HI for a very long time. You guys have shown me that there is just too much variation to collect. I seem to read and re-read about the Kamis and the Khuks constantly now. I also used to think I had a pretty big collection, but now I know I am a fledgling in every way. Lots to look forward to though.

Yeah, I guess I'm pretty much in that group. I occasionally will pick up a new pocket knife when I "need" one. :D

HI is pretty much all I buy. Great quality, great service, and you get the warm fuzzies knowing you've made a difference to people that need the $$$ to live. The only other brands I buy are leatherman and victorinox. Actually, there are very few days where I leave the house without a SAK, a leatherman, and my Sarge.
The only think that has been tempting me as of late is a reasonably priced swing guard auto. If i could find one of those, I'd buy it. But I'm willing to spend much more of hand-crafted REAL tools like khuks, than simple toys that have no real use other than putting holes in people. My seax would probably be better at that anyway:)

What a good idea for a thread.

I did get a nice pocket knife after I'd found HI, but that's it. I'm not completely a 'knife guy' though, more of a 'gunnie'.

I was looking for a wood cutting tool and found HI. I haven't gone anywere else but would if I needed the right tool for a job.

I still like folders and other fixed blades. HI was a more recent hobby for me. And I still won't mind getting an occasional khuk from another company like KH. Right now, I feel best about my HI knives.

I've always liked knives, but never really went at it in a big way until I started collecting my stuff for disaster preparedness, then I got hooked. It started with a cheap survival knife -- a $40 thing with like 3 dozen functions from fishing lines, slingshot, compass to a blade (which is cheap and has a loose blade -- and this is a fixed blade).

Most of my collection consists of HI Khukuris but I also have a Cold Steel LTC along with a couple of the antique khukuris that Atlanta Cutlery is selling, a Bhodjpure and a WWI I think they are.
I also have a nice collection of Marble's knives with one of them being a pre-WW II Ideal that I'm quite fond of. :D
Then there are the two Keris along with the Sundang, Moro Sword, that I keep in my possession. It's said that no one can own a Keris and in some strange way I have always felt that about them unlike the other knives that I am certain I actually own instead of just merely being in possession of.
And I can't forget the Bowies of which the two most recent acquisitions of are the Musso Bowie and the Iron Mistress from Imperial Weapons made in the Philippines.
The Case Bowie and the Cold Steel Trailmaster make for over the three that's considered a collection.
I can also say I have a collection of Cold Steel knives seeing as how I own the Trailmaster, a SRK, a LTC kukri, and a large Twistmaster.
And then there are the hodge pod of different knives I own, an Argentine Calvary Short Sword, a couple of German hunting knives, A Linder Buffalo Skinner - up swept trailing point.
Then the Gaucho knife, my brother's old Western, a modern well made replica of an ndn trade knife sometimes called a Beaver Tail Dagger, a couple of very nice small knives that Sarge was most gracious enough to give me:cool: along with a Raker hunting knife made by my buddy and a fellow Cherokee Ray Kirk from 52100 and the handmade hunting knife by Ronnie Foster from 1084.
Also have a couple of Busse's, a couple of Swamp Rat knives.
A couple of Red River and Hudson Bay knives also made by Cold Steel, a strange Mexican knife with no edge or any sign of ever been sharpened and a couple of Moroccan Flyssa's.
One of these days I'm going to sell off some of my HI Khukuris in order to raise some funds to get a couple or so of the knives from the Valiant Company. Some of those are just pretty damned neat!!!!
And then last but not least a small collection of slip joint folders along with a couple of Kershaw frame locks.
One of these days I'd like to have a Spyderco Military or another of their large knives. :D

I am actually looking at the valiant web site now............!!!!!!!!!!!

If you decide to let go some of your Khuks please give me a call too :o

What kind of condition are these in? I was looking at them, but I've been a little hesitant to order one.

I pretty much only buy HI now. I'm up to about 18-19 at this point, and I have over 50 knives altogether, but I "probably" won't be buying anything else again for a while. I did buy a Cold Steel Carbon V Peacekeeper for my BIL for X-Mas, because that's what he wanted (I should've gotten him a trisul) and I'm buying a SAK for my nephew.

Its certainly possible that I'll buy a folder here and there (unless we can get the Kamis to make a folder!). I'm mainly looking for antler handled HI's at this point.

Except for a local no carry law I would carry my 15 inch B:A:S: most places . Then again I don,t go most places . It seems like the local green spaces and of course the archery range occupy my time . When I get a decent accessory skinner I,ll feel a little better . I have a Helle blade
small skinner that is scary . I don,t think it would hold up to the durability of H:I: knives .

i've adopted one of valiant's keris, it has a soul of it's own. also have a nice golok from them & their damascus kopis, thought about buying one of their damascus dha's but found mine on ebay before i commited, valiant still have a few sharp pointy things i may send off for. right now am looking for a nice flyssa myself, as well as a russian shashka, if i can find any to fit my budget....tho there are a few newer HI models i've been missing in the deals of the day, the sharks beat me to all the good stuff, must be the the time zone difference.

from what i can see mr.suwandi at valiant is an honourable man, too few in this world today.

I buy mostly HI's nowadays. Given, I do occasionally try some other stuff, like CRKT, Cold Steel, etc. But HI is where my money has been going and will keep going for the foreseeable future.

So, it seems I really am an oddball...

The only other knives I've ever been interested in filled a specific need and had an emotional attachment (one boy scout knife and one air force survival knife - not that I haven't had others, they just didn't matter) which is how I got here I guess...I needed a khukuri. I may be the one guy here that found his perfect knife (16.5" Bura Chiruwa WWII).

Me too. You said it well about HI, the only modern kinfes I get. Also carry a leatherman --- will check out victorinox since we agree on all the rest!

I have a bunch of blades that were purchased before I knew about Himalayan Imports and this Forum. No reason to get rid of them, but they sit mostly unused now. I figure my boys will have a "hoot" dividing them up when I am gone.

Exceptions made for Dan Koster's creations and the Spyderco's that I EDC. Otherwise, my purchases for the last year have been HI. I am a bit curious about Busse, but the entry price is a bit high to overcome (JMHO).
