Anyone else own a Kellam?-or a Helle Lappland?

I've had a Kellam Wolverine for about a year and half, it's a lovely knife. I've been using it again recently and for the fun of it I'm thinking of getting back into "traditional" style blades (lately I've been using an RC-3 as a belt knife and a KA-BAR Machete Cutlass for a chopper).

So, has anybody used Kellam knives? If not I really recommend them as a production blade.

I've started thinking about purchasing a Helle Lappland, it's an 8 1/4 inch bladed leuku, has anyone tried one of these? What did you think of it?

I've tried a leuku in the past, a custom one from Finland but the handle was far too thick for me to comfortably use.

I'm hoping the Helle Lappland handle won't be such a beast.

Thanks,

The helle does have a big handle, it is typical of that kind of knife. If you are wanting it as your dedicated chopper, I would reccomend that you get in touch with Koyote here on the forums. He does a traditional leuku with a few modifycations that make it more suited to the dedicated chopper role.

I have a Helle Harding. It was fairly pricey and I don't feel the fit and finish were up to par. It would be a very attractive knife, but has a terrible fit between the bolster and the blade, showing spaces where the blade goes from full-width to tang-width as it passes through the bolster. Although it still looks pretty nice and the blade is superb, every time I pick it up my eyes go right to the poorly-fitted blade/bolster. I probably wouldn't buy another Helle.

I think if I was going to buy a Leku, I'd try an Ahti. They have a large, but contoured, handle that looks like it might be a bit handier than the traditional types. (This isn't meant as a recommendation; I've never even seen one first hand, let alone used one.)

Stay sharp,

I have the Helle Lappland. I had two of them. Now I have big hands to the Lappland worked well for me but it does have a big handle. I have had several Kellem knives which all performed very well. Sometime the fit is not perfect but it does not effect their performance. JMO.

I'll echo desmobob's Helle comments for my Helle Futura. It's an attractive knife and very comfortable, but the fit/finish at the bolster is a bit rough. The bigger issue is that the blade BENDS rather easily where it meets the handle (I can do it with my bare hands). I hope this is just a flaw of this individual knife. The knife is fine for light duty around the yard, but I don't trust it for woods or camping use.

The scandis I really admire are the Karasuandos. I'd like one of those sometime.

Heard nothing but good about kellam's. As for leuku's, I purchased a koyote traditional leuku and it is a great chopper, but a big blade. More like a small 10" machete than the typical leuku's.

I've got a Kellam Wolverine, it's a beautiful knife. Got it a bit wet this summer though, and there's now a little bit of space between the handle and the bolster, but it doesn't seem to have any negative effects yet.

If the handle is too big you can always use some sandpaper to make it fit your hand.
