This is Royal Caribian's newest ship, Oasis of the Sea, as it comes into port in Ft. Lauderdale today at conclusion of its shakedown cruise from Finland. It will make its first passenger cruise from Ft. Lauderdale in December. This is the largest cruise ship ever. It has 16 decks.

Those are fire boats along side it... and they can only get their water spray up about 3/4 of the way on this ship.

If the thing catches on fire out in the middle of the Pacific, or wherever it's going, I don't think there will be that many fireboats around to do anything anyway.

The bigger they are the harder and more spectacular they fall. However, the ship is probably built much like a highrise building. Inside there are standpipes and hydrants for firefighters to fight the fire within the ship, this would be the only way to fight a fire on a structure of this size.

However, like a highrise building, an out of control fire would be a disaster.

I recall that there was a fire on a Carnival cruise ship liner just a few years back, and it was extremely difficult to extringuish. I don't know how many died in that one.

Great, you can take your vacation with an entire city of grumpy old farts....No tanks...

The first time I saw it I thought it looked top heavy.

It may not survive a really bad storm as top heavy as it looks.

She has to be top heavy. If her draft were enough to properly counter her height, she'd not fit in many harbors.

Plus 1 on not wanting to take a trip on her. Her capacity is 6,000 passengers. No way would being among that many people be a vacation to me.

Ship ? NO, it's a floating city. NOT for me. Does have nice Azipods though !!

She ran through a hurricane with 80' seas on her maiden voyage. Captain's Log

She draws 31 feet and at 225, 282 tons gross, she is nearly 6 times the tonnage of the Titanic. Height is 236 feet above the waterline. Her funnels are telescoping so they can retract to clear some bridges. She'll have a sister ship, Allure of the Seas, in late 2010.

Most broad beam ships are snappy when it comes to self-righting in roll but I still wouldn't trust her. Let her take a couple of 100 foot plus rogue waves abeam before she gets her java sea cert..
