Anyone else sick of the word "tactical"?

I'm writing this because apparently the new line coming from SRKW is going to be the "Swamp Rat Tactical" line. Based on the thread that Eric brought back to life in the SRKW Rat Chat, it's going to involve Micarta handles. Since he specifically mentioned something abuot the heat resistant properties of Res-C (or lack thereof) I'm gonna guess that we might be seeing the Entry Hawk with Micarta handles, and possibly a larger knife than the Battle Rat. (He said something like "wait till you see what's coming" in response to someone marvelling at how low the BR hangs in the sheath.) I'm sure the knives that are released are going to be really really cool, and I'm going to greatly regret being unemployed and unable to send big checks off to the Swamp.

That having been said, I would prefer almost any other word to "tactical" to describe the new line. I see that word used to describe just about any knife that's released without one of those silly deer-foot handles, and I'm sure that someone has a "deer foot tactical" out there that I haven't seen. The entire SR line (Bog Dog possibly excepted) is "tactical" if you come right down to it, and the micarta won't make the knives any more tactical. If you're going with micarta because of the things that resiprene-C can't handle, then call the new line "extreme environment" or something. Aside from the word being horribly overused and seemingly inaccurate, it also provides fodder for prosecuting attorneys to use if one of your customers should need to use their knife in self defense. "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, the fact that this man wanted to go out and kill people is readily evidenced by the fact that he purchased a "tactical" knife instead of a normal hunting blade." I know it's BS, but it happens in court rooms.

I know I'm not the only Rat fan that feels this way, so speak up folks. Maybe we can get Eric's ear before he buys the banners for his Blade booth.

I don't mind "tactical" if it's appropriate. I especially like it when referring to cardboard sheaths. The only word off the top of my head that would raise my ire would be "extreme" or any of its variances. I do hate that word.

What makes a knife tactical anyways?

Cheers,
BJB :D

Just think of it as the new SRT line, that's how we have been referring to it for months. After a while you'll forget what it even stands for ;)

The new line will be just that a new "line" the Tactical wording is so that we are able to differentiate them from the original line. There will be some major differences, but also some things that remain the same. Without the new designation it might become very confusing discussing the models we will have available in the future.
You'll understand the reason for this when we are able to show the pics, trust me ;)

I do appreciate your input and suggestions.

The only thing extreme about our new line is it's performance....wait insane may be a better description.....ok I've got it insanely extreme performance....no that's not quite right, let me think about it and let you know ;):p

From good old Websters:

Main Entry: tac·ti·cal
Pronunciation: 'tak-ti-k&l
Function: adjective
1 : of or relating to combat tactics : as a (1) : of or occurring at the battlefront <tactical defense> <tactical first strike> (2) : using or being weapons or forces employed at the battlefront <tactical missiles> b of an air force : of, relating to, or designed for air attack in close support of friendly ground forces
2 a : of or relating to tactics : as (1) : of or relating to small-scale actions serving a larger purpose (2) : made or carried out with only a limited or immediate end in view b : adroit in planning or maneuvering to accomplish a purpose
- tac·ti·cal·ly /-k(&-)lE/ adverb

I realize that many of our troops and LEO's buy and use tactical knives, but as a civilian, I sure would feel silly with a "tactical" knife (Even though most of my knives would fall under this catagory). My uses vary from general camping and outdoors work to plain, boring things like opening boxes and slicing apples. But I think we are all stuck with certain terms that have taken on wide meanings.

Well, if you think the word tactical has become irritating in the knife world, just check the tactical flashlights and especially tactical watches :)

Main Entry: adroit
Pronunciation: &-'droit
Function: adjective
Etymology: French, from Old French, from a- (from Latin ad-) + droit right, droit
: having or showing skill, cleverness, or resourcefulness in handling situations <an adroit leader>

  sorry.... i had to look it up, so i thought id post it....

its all about tactical tackle... and i have a tactical apple slicer - only cost 300$ :( ...

i did forget that when busse combat gets new equipment so does swamp rat... or at least, that seems to be what would happen since swamp rat takes over the shop at night. im hopeing for that rachete :D

your right... but it will be

*soon to be kydex with mods  *

I wrote a long boring essay on the subject of tactical knives which can be found in this thread.

According to my way of thinking, Swamp Rats are among the few knives that should be called tactical, so I think its a fine name for the new line.

Classic:D:D:D

Seth is cracking me up!

Ya got me thinking...intead of Tac or tactical, have a line of:

Strategic knives--for when you're planning to take a tactial knife along.

Tactful knives--Perhaps with 'excuse me' or "sorry" marked onthe blades. I guess those knives listed as "discrete carry" are 'tactful' knives.

Tactile knives - knives that 'feel good.' mebbe sambar shag handles and knit doiley sheath cover.

More on topic for Swamp rat might me:

the Brood line-- 3/4 scale biggie designs, or a biggie and a 3/4 sized one piggyback in the same sheath.

the Lab Rat line-- silver (polished, blasted, or brushed) finishes on blades, white micarta handles with two red or copper pins, and metal cage sheath. (rat tail filework on spine optional)

enjoy!

I think tactical is the most over used word around, for pity's sake we're talking about sporting goods here.

Now I'll just cinch up my tactical belt and walk outta here on my tactical sneakers.....hey is this carpet a tactical floor covering? Is my computer a tactical electronic interface device?

Time to actuate the O-N/O-F-F modulator.

Off topic, I know, but I'D be happy if they'd just come out with something in either a neck knife (as a REGULAR thing- not all of us can make it to ATL.), or at least something in a length less than 3" so that more people could carry their knives. THAT'S what I want!

Sincerely,
Anthony
