I am not sure if it's just still breaking-in but I was expecting better results. Anyone with long term use care to share your thoughts?

There is quite a break in period. Like the coarser diamond benchstones, the D8EE has extra diamonds resting on top of those embedded in the nickel.

On top of that, the D8EE is one of the few high-quality diamond benchstones that really does require light pressure (conversely, bearing down with blades on the D8XX until I got tendon damage didn't hurt that benchstone...).

Once you finally get it broke in (very very light rubbing against a D8E helps speed it up a bit) and religiously use a light touch and water or a thin oil (or both by using water mixed with a drop of soap), it will make a pretty good edge polished edge. Better still, if you use waterstones, you can use it on your polishing stones after flattening and before sharpening to add some extra-fine slurry to the waterstones' surface.

It has been getting better but still not the finish I can get with a spyderco UF ceramic. If I don't use the ceramic and try and finish with just diamond paste I have to start at 6 micron to get the scraches out left by the stone. I have been using light preasure (something I'am not use to) and it seems to work just as fast and for some reason I can hold the angle much better.

How long have you been using your's?

I've had mine since January 2007 and wish I had never bought it. Learned the hard way not to apply excessive pressure, so it's not like I can resell it. I don't use it as much as stuff like lapping film, waterstones, sanding belts, and strops let alone other diamond benchstones.

I got it right away when I first heart about it, but in us did not see any difference with Extra fine.

Thanks, Vassili.

There's a difference you should give yours a second chance, the worst that could happen is your knives would be sharper.:D

My comparison was with the spyderco UF ceramic, its scratch pattern is close but not equal.

According to DMT it is 3 microns (vs 9 microns for Extra Fine), not such a big difference. Green polish less then 0.5 microns better anyway.

Thanks, Vassili.

BTW, I heart Ultra Fine is also 3 microns.

Making the jump from 9 to 0.5 is quite large, not saying that it dosen't work I've done it myself a few times but your missing out on your edge being a lot sharper.

The UF ceramic is 3 microns maybe even a hair less.

I do not know... I think I did not see quite a bit of edges as sharp as mine, but did not see yet any sharper so far. I saw you whittling hair pictures, but what can you do sharper then this?

Thanks, Vassili.

I have one coming in and can't wait to use it. With DMTs I expect a long break in period in their finer benchstones as they are very aggressive. One of my final finising stones is my well worn course diasharp that polishes and puts a toothy edge on my knives ( depending on steel of course). I have a fine and extra fine diasharp that I cannot wait to be well worn to see what they do for final edges.

I may have spoke to soon, in the past few days there has been a dramatic change. Still not the finish of the UF creamic but darn close, guess its starting to finally break-in.
