Anyone else wish for "midsize" stockman?

I'm a fan of the Buck 303 and 301 stockman models but really wish they'd of had another model in between these two.

Right around the 3 5/8", 3 3/4" closed neighborhood.

I find the 301 just a bit big in my pocket, and in days when my hands are hurting and acting up, the 303 is a bit small to work with. So I'll usually grab the 301 if I'm wanting a stockman that day.

So a model there in the middle would be just right for me I think. I've models from other makers in this size that feel pretty good in hand.

Just thinking out loud here. Would also like a whittler from Buck in this size too. Lol. ;)

Though discontinued the 701 Bronco is 3.75" closed. You might try checking one out. I love the 700 series. Very well built, in fact some might consider them "over built" and very good looking at least to my eye.

Ah, good call. Didn't consider the 700 series. I should do better research I think. Thanks!

You're quite welcome. I'd love to see Buck bring the 700 back as long as they don't mess with the basic design.

Joe,

Badhammer made a good suggestion for you. Here is a photo.

Joe,

Here is a photo of a 301, 701 and 303 so you can see size differences. The 701 is intermediate in length, but it is a little more bulky.

Sounds just like what I'm after Bert - I appreciate all the help you guys offer so quickly. :)

Actually I wish they would bring the next size up from the 301 back and offer it with D cherrywood scales and 5160 steel!

For some of us knife nuts, we wish for magic to happen. Some companies with smaller operations and costs (GEC) will do some different sized, metaled and scaled knives a couple times a year. Case and Buck are large enough that small runs, and to them a small run is 5,000 knives, are not economical to the operation. I would like to see Buck make different configurations, scales, metals, etc. but I just don't think we will ever get a frequent offering of that type. I will be happy if they did something new just once a year. Sort of like they did in the late eighties when we saw jigged bone and some different colors. I still suggest at every chance for a nice two blade with secondary blade being a Warcliff design. We have had threads in the past with wants but I think none have grown roots. Alas.....

Hey Bert - could you do me a favor and post a picture of the 303, 301, and the 701 from the back spring side next to each other please.

I'm trying to see how they compare as to handle thickness to each other.

There's a 1994 model on the auction site I'm watching and I was curious. Also trying to get an idea of what a decent price is. I need to do a search on there for previous sold ones to see. Haven't gotten that far yet. Still have a day and a half or so before it ends.

I was kinda thinking of maybe going for that one, then watching for an earlier model with the script logo to come along that's in good shape to squirrel away. I'm very OCD/anal about having backups. Sometimes several if it's a model I'm quite find of.

Joe

**300Bucks - you're spot on about special runs. I'd be happy if they just expanded their custom shop a bit more to include more models you could build. Like one of these 701 guys with BG42. But in reality, to me and my needs, their standard steel is pretty darn good actually. Tnx!

Check completed auctions for pricing. I've been a fan of the 700 series for several years and can say for sure that I'm not the only one cause I seem to get beat out a lot on auctions. Folks are really taking a liking to these especially anything NIB or like new. Bids seem to be running from way high to ridiculous lately

Joe,

Take a look at the photo. It isn't pretty; the knives did not seem to cooperate about staying in position.

That's great Bert - I like actually that it is a little thicker maybe. My hands and joints are pretty bad in some days so a little heftier knife is easier for me.

Much appreciated!!

Badhammer,

I get a bit envious when people talk about finding knives at garage sales, pawn shops and local auctions. That doesn't happen here. The 701 I showed is an exception. I picked it up at a local auction for $22. It is one of about 3 knives that I found locally over the years.
