Just realized the other day my code 4 is smacking the body spine when closing...

Anyone else's Code 4 do this?

As in the edge is coming in contact with the metal back? That's not good. I would call cold steel. I highly doubt it's normal as that will completely ruin the edge.

That doesn't look right. Might want to post in the cs area, the mod there might be able to help you.

Yea it looks like it is slapping against the metal spine. Making this groove. I don't know if it just started or has done this since I got it but I just noticed last week. And it has always made a slapping sound every time I close it.

I just wanted to ask and see if this was normal of Code4's before I made a fuss.

On a lockback knife, the edge of the blade will be up against the inside of the knife handle in certain places.

You have to make sure that when you are closing the knife, that you make sure that the blade doesn't 'slam' shut to help prevent this.

I have lock back knives from many different makers (including Cold Steel with the triad lock) and none of them have their blades contacting the metal on the back of the spring. I would send it back to Cold Steel.

Normally, there is a slightly raised portion of the blade, just behind the cutting edge and in front of the choil called the kick that prevents the blade from contacting the knife. It is probable that when they machined your blade this part was polished or cut off too short.

The Tri-Ad lock has a small stop pin down inside the handle that's supposed to prevent this; it keeps the blade from closing far enough. It almost looks like someone at the factory left it out on yours. Definitely contact Cold Steel (phone is the best way).

edit: A couple models with the Tri-Ad use an extended portion of the lock bar for the same purpose. Not totally sure which the Code 4 uses, though my money'd be on the stop pin.

Well that sucks... I called cold steel and they said yea sure no problem...

Just pay for shipping to and from and cover their "repair charge"...

I figured they would make it right but they won't even look at it with out me paying for shipping to them. Kind of crappy service/warranty.

Ask for a email where you can send pics and make sure they know this is due to product defect and not something you've done.

Biting the bullet on shipping one way at least is usually par for the course.

Look at the difference between the lock engagement on the Spyderco and the Cold Steel. It is pretty significant.

OP you need to call them as they may think it is something you have done. Make it clear this is a manufacturers defect. Cold Steel should warranty this. Also, you might contact whichever company you bought it from and tell them it is defective.

I got it off amazon.

And I did try to explain but the CS rep on the phone since the second I said I have a question about my knife not working, you could tell his face dropped and he just wanted to get me off the phone and be done with the convo. So I cut it short and just said thanks for your time after he quickly sent me the email to send it to them after I paid postage and read I would probably have to pay for serive charge.

I got more help from the email than the CS rep....

Code4 uses the stop pin (as described and shown above by G. Scott H of the Voyager). Have you had your Code4 apart? If so, you may have neglected to reinstall the stop pin.

You can see the stop pin with the knife open (it's up by the rounded portion of the butt of the blade when opened). Shine a flashlight in there and see if it's there. If not, that's your problem. Having CS ship a tiny stop pin replacement would be considerably less expensive than shipping the whole knife back and forth.

Alternately... how long ago did you buy it from amazon? They typically have a 30-day return policy (at least if you have Prime, which I do... not sure if you're not a Prime member I guess)... anyway, if the stop pin is missing (and you didn't lose it yourself on disassembly) then you can return it as defective for a replacement or refund if within 30 days. Something to consider.
