Anyone encounter any of those metal ties on toys today?

I'm talking about the metal ties that are coated in clear plastic. I cut some last night with my Griptilian and it pretty much ruined my blade. On the 4th cut the dang things took a 1 inch wide chunk about 1/16th inch deep out of my blade. I was blown away.

I'm not sure if I should be happy about my 440C Grip or throw it away now :)

I guess I'm not supposed to be cutting metal ties.

I did reprofile my blade and sharpen it and now it's fine.

Yep
It was yesteday for us. I have a 2 yr old so just about everything had some sort of tie. I didn't use my knife on metal ties but cut box so I could get my hands in.
If your still happy with reprofiled edge use it. Although it's a good reason to update:D
Cheers

I ran afoul of those things some years ago. I keep a pair of diagonal cutters handy now. It was a sick NKP that probably invented them.:D

I did, and I used a Leatherman/RadioShack multitool to make short work of them.

I had several of my sons gifts come with those damm things this AM. My trusty 14 year old Cold Steel SRK ripped right through the wire, no problem.

Would all steels do as crappy as my 440C did? Are there knives that have ripped through that stuff with no problems?

What kind of steel is your CS SRK hicomp2?

I dulled an edge a bit once, They're not hard to untwist, so that's what I usually do. Didn't see any of them this Christmas.

Copper; I honestly don't know what kind of steel it is. It came razor sharp, I have used it often in the outdoors, resharpened it many times and it still has a razor sharp edge. If I remember correctly, it is the Carbon V steel...??? I know that is what my Trailmaster Bowie has, but I just bought that last year. These two knives are quite similar, aside from size/heft. This SRK was bought through SMKW in the early 1990's. I wanted the Trailmaster back then, but I was too cheap and went with the SRK. A great knife, in my opinion (the SRK), don't get me wrong, but I like a heavy, longer , big knife. So when I saw a Trailmaster last year new for about $95.00 on E-bay, I grabbed it.

I took a couple small nicks out of the blade on my Native, but they easily sharpened out and the knife cut the ties no problem otherwise. I was pleased.

I suspect the blade damage (or lack of) is more a function of blade profile, less a testament of the blade steel.

It was a factory profile and I don't know what that would be for a 550 BM.

I just sharpened it out on my Lansky at 25 degrees.

Yeah, I nicked my S30V Military on one. Didn't know the thing had metal in it until it was too late.

In general, you shouldn't cut metal with metal knives. The steel your blade is made from may be MUCH stronger than the cheap metal you are trying to cut, but the edge of your blade is very thin. It is normal to ding your edge when trying to use it on metal or other very hard materials. The knife wasn't the problem, though some knives can deal with it better than others.

Thanks Hair. That's what I figured. That's why I sharpened it out and didn't worry too much about it. Been a great knife other than that. :D
