I hate to fly but my friends are going on a trip to nepal. They are flying into tiland (SP?) then onto nepal. They are flying some airline ive never heard of before. Are these small airlines as safe as the big boys? Also are there any dangers of going into these countrys?

Been to Nepal twice and am am planning a third trip sometime in the next 2-3 years. The Himalayas are bigger than you can imagine so your friends are in for some beathtaking sights - and some breathtaking climbing. Nepal is no more or less safe than anywhere else. They have outlaws just like us. If you are trekking away from the main trails then it pays to have a guide with you. If I was going for a short visit then I would stay on the main trails - they are spectacular anyway and you get to interact with local villagers all the way.

Politically it is less stable than it has been, with a few Marxist rebels (can't these guys get with the times? That was soooo 1960's) causing some trouble. But really, these countries place such value on their tourist income that most people will go out of their way to make sure you are safe and happy.

It's common to fly to Kathmandu via Thailand (Bangkok). International Airlines all conform to a standard nowadays and are no more or less safe than each other. Some domestic carriers in third world countries can be a little dodgy. I can remember flying Vietnam airlines in the early 90's and being pretty scared, especially when the russian plane filled with fog shortly after takeoff. Most asian airlines - Thai, Cathay Pacific, Malaysian Airlines, Garuda etc have a better safety record than the major U.S. carriers. Then again they don't have to fly in and out of some of your crowded airports.

Nepal is one of the few places left in the world that is not ruled by the motor car. get out of the two major cities (Katmandu and Pokkora) and everything is either transported by foot or on the back of a donkey. Travelling there is like living a seminar every day on how to simplify and give greater meaning to your life. Amazing people.

Ask about Nepal in the Himalayan Imports forum at this website -- in the Manufacturers section.
