Anyone ever drilled a lanyard hole in there firesteel?

I have drilled a hole through a firesteel (mishmetal) with no problem. You need to keep the drill speed very low to keep things from sparking. the firesteel is actually very soft and easy to drill through.
Good Luck

I use a spray bottle of water to cool and lubricate the drill bit. Eliminates sparking and extends the length of time it takes to dull the bit. I've done 40 or 50 this way without a problem.

Yup, it's really easy to drill, as stated just go slow and it's all good. One thing to mention is clean up the area your using !!! I have had a bit of a bonfire when drilling fero rods, it sparked into a tub of titanuim shavings and cutting fluid and just burst in to flames. :foot:

Yes, I drilled a hole in a small one for a PSK. Seemed anti-climactic.

Putting a handle on is more gratifying though. Then, you've got functional art created by yourself. Craftsmanship is second to none, and totally a conversation starter. The hole in my Mishmetal rod, not so much.

Do it high speed, it's more fun that way. :D

I actually wear sunglasses when I do it. As others have recommended, definitely keep flammable objects far away. I have lit a shop towel or two on fire while drilling ferro rod holes.

As with anything you drill, always wear eye protection. With something where you are expecting sparks, a full face shield and long-sleeved shirt are probably in order tooI

I've drilled holes through firesteels. I didn't do anything to keep it from sparking, either. It's no problem if it sparks. I just put on (tinted) goggles, and went at it, in the sink. Quite the fireworks show!

I always recommend a center drill to start the hole with. A #2 should work fine.

Yeah, I just drilled one yesterday.:D
