Anyone ever have this issue?

Hello all, just curious if anyone has ever experienced this problem with the Sebenza line... I'm not sure if this is just a testament to my awesome sharpening skills (bit of sarcasm intended, but it was quite sharp) or a simple design curiosity. I no longer have this knife, but may pick one up again in the future... who knows. This was one of the reasons I got rid of it (see picture). I once had the knife in my front pocket and when going to access it, the edge of my thumb ran down the spine and cut me. I did not think a lot of this and just let it go and tried to be a bit more careful. I did not have a camera handy at the time. This second time, I had the knife in my computer bag, I scooped it up with my finger and rolled it into my palm (like you would any knife) and apparently I squeezed it a bit to hard... needless to say I got a nice little surprise. Just for clarification, this happened while the knife was closed both times. I love that the knife is very compact for its blade size, but this seems like it could be a bit of an issue... As you can tell, I do need to moisturize my hands more but I do not have a lot of extra meat on my fingers to get wedged in there. I would assume this would be more of a problem for people with um... meatier hands. So really, just curious if this has happened to anyone else... I know someone will chime in with "well don't squeeze it hard, etc etc" Advance response: Of course, that is obvious. I would also envision this being an issue if you needed to use the knife in a non lethal defensive way- obviously you would be gripping it very hard while closed. Anyway, other than that and a few other minor things I did enjoy the knife quite a bit. Just not for me I suppose. Thanks!

What are you getting cut by, the back of the blade? Or is the blade opening slightly in your pocket?

Are you gripping the closed knife so hard that you're cutting yourself on the blade while it is closed inside the handles???

Whatever you're doing :D, no I never had that problem...

The only way you could cut yourself is if the knife came open in your pocket, that has never happened to me,the ti edges are not sharp enough to cut you..

Yes, while it was closed inside the handle. I didn't even squeeze it very hard... just the way I closed my hand, the skin on my fingers got pressed into the blade and that was the result. Seems the edge of the blade is just quite close to the spine of the knife when closed.

i tried it,my skin will touch the edge, but no cut,hmm might send it back it see what CRC says itz a first for me..

After sharpening it several times, as the edge gets worn down it will obviously be less and less of a concern. This was a factory edge that had only been stropped a bit.

""Anyone ever have this issue?""

Nope, Your the Only person to ever have this problem.........lol. I have never had a problem getting cut opening or closing my sebenze. I can see getting cut by squeezing a umnumzaan hard because of the nearly sharpened swedge. As far as a sebbie though, not an issue with me. I have had the blade close on my fingers when closing it one handed because I did not get them out of the way in time, but it did not cut them because I caught myself.

The only time my large 21 ever cut me was when closing it...I always let the blade fall to my thumb nail...and i had cut the nail too short so it got flesh instead...

The tolerances on everything for the sebenza are very tight.
If the knife opens up something like 5 degrees from closed, the tip will clear the handle and pose a hazard.
I've never had anything happen to me regarding the blade being too close to the spine when closed, but I can see that as something that could happen in the right circumstance.

I have seen this asked a few times over the years.I think it happening has to do with the size of your fingers and type skin you have.I can not come anywhere near getting enough skin in there to be cut.

I know what you are talking about and you are not alone. I had the same thing happen to me with either one of my Sebenza21's or Classic's. For some reason it seemed that when the knife was closed, the cutting edge was near the top opening between the handle slabs. If I got a little bit of my hand/finger in that open area it would cut me.

nyefmaker: this wasn't an issue while opening and closing the knife... both happened while the knife was fully closed.

thanks for the input everyone. i couldn't imagine i was the only person this has ever happened to.

Can't remember which knife it was, but I once cut myself on the closed blade of an open back type knife. I simply ran my hand down the back and enough of my skin was in contact with the blade to cut me.

I've got a large classic that I am looking at right now - I edc it during the week while in the office.

When closed - the blade is a good 1\8" plus into the Ti handles - there is no way I could cut myself without going through a lot of gymnastics. The blade is recessed in too far.

The knife is only 2 months old - I bought it new. It hasn't been sharpened yet.

Maybe you got a bad one?

I have also done this very thing. With a large 21 as well. It was righ after I got it (my first Seb) and I was playing with it, rolling it in my hand, and when I gripped it very hard it bit my middle finger in exactly the same place as yours. The knife was closed at the time.
