anyone ever read this book?

I forget the gentelmans name, but he lived in soleitude in alaska for 35 years and wrote a book and filmed a movie about it. he came out of the woods at age 82 because he couldnt take the harsh winters anymore. The film takes place in the 50s. I saw part of the movie on a pbs special but didnt catch the name. thanks for the help.

He went into the bush at age 50 after he retired, that was in about 1969 if I recall.


Good show on PBS, I have been meaning to purchase the book.

I checked out the book at the local library. Actually got the book by interlibrary loan. Anyway, it is an interesting story although a bit dry reading at times. This is most definitely a certain kind of person and a product of his times. My wife couldn't get into it but I enjoyed the book.
