Anyone ever reground an Izula?

I just wondered if anyone has ever had an Izula reground or done it themselves?

Like from someone like Tom Krein?

Just curious.

I am considering getting it done to an Izula but would love to hear your thoughts. I don't want it too thin but I bet that 1095 would love to be reground and I would think the Izula would be a good candidate.

Thoughts, opinions?

Hmmm, I'm not too sure that I see the need for the Izula TBH. What is it about the factory grind that you don't like?

It's not that I don't like it. It's more that I'm used to thinner users. Now that I've removed the coating maybe I'll just see how well that works for now. :)

I reprofiled mine by hand on a DMT stone. Not sure what angle, I'd guess 12-10 degrees per side. Cuts much better than the factory edge, which was too thick for me after carrying reprofiled Spydercos for years. Didn't carve wood as easily as I like. I've been intentionally rough cutting thick plastic and whittling hardwood to test the edge and it's held up fine. 1095 is pretty durable from my previous experiences, so no surprises here.

Excuse the low res cell phone photo...

Im probably going to stick with a full flat grind and just do a thin convex edge. I think taking the rest of the knife down would defeat the purpose of a fixed blade of this type. They work for spyderco's but I would never do the things I do with my izula on my delica.

I'm gonna take my Izula down to like 14-15 degrees and my RC-6 to 17 degrees to start with and see how they hold the edge.

I put a pretty thin grind on mine, similar to Vivi's, this past summer and haven't any problems as far as durability. I have dropped it a few time as and rolled the edge (on concrete) and put a few dings in it (concrete again) but five minutes with a coarse DMT paddle and she's as good as new. Nothing wrong with the factory grind, I too just prefer a thinner edge. 1095 is tougher than nails as is and with Rowens heat treat, I don't forsee any complications.

I reduced the angle on my IZULA via freehand sharpening, starting with a course Norton stone and worked through the grades all the way to stopping.

The resultant edge is hair popping sharp and more useable for me. Nothing wrong with the factory edge, but you can definately improve it if you want.

Mine are all lightly reprofiled. I don't keep track of angle or any of that nonsense, just thin them out a bit with a DMT. I guess the result is a frankenvex. Not really flat, not really convex.

It works well on that shape and thickness.

Only RATs I have with a factory edge is my RC-3s as the thin blade has a great edge from the bag. Otherwise they all end up thinned out a bit.

I reground my Izula on a Tormek T7 to a 15 degree bevel (30° total); the tip is slightly wider, like 17 degrees or something.
Anyway, this is what it came out as. I haven't finished honing and polishing it, but just from carving a bit of wood, I can tell that there is a difference in performance.
As you can see, I ground the edge all the way over the choil. Ugly, some might say, but I only care for performance and now stuff doesn't snag on the choil area — plus I have a bit more edge.

My Izula is gradually getting a Convex edge by the way I sharpen it. However, I didn't flat out convex it. It cut well enough from the factory.

I prefer a convex edge. My RC-3 And RC-5 are re-profiled to a polished convex, they slice like a dream and baton too! Planning on re-profiling my 2 Izulas and the lady's Tactical pink one, as well as my RC-4...But I think i'll keep my RP knife with the factory edge...for some reason this knife is hard for me to mess with, its just too perfect.

I think you guys are confusing reprofiling (changing the edge) and regrinding (changing most to all of the blade), the latter being what Mr. Lowry is asking about.

I'm a factory edge kinda guy. I use whats there, over time touching up with a strop all my knives get convexed ;)

what about putting a convex grind on the Izula is it a good canidate? I saw a youtube video or two and was curious to how many people do it?
