I notice Carnival Cruises states that you can take a knife with you onboard as long as it has a 4” or less blade. This surprises me. Has anyone taken a folder with them on a cruise?

There have been tales here of doing it just fine.

Get yourself a $17 Victorinox recruit, it's compact and non threatening, very functional, you get more than just a knife blade, and it's readily available for only $17 if you lose it.

I agree with the SAK advice. Either that or a multitool would be my first choice. Perhaps an Opinel or a slipjoint.

However, I've brought a bunch of knives on cruise ships because I had to continue my trip afterwards and took all my luggage with me. I even had some big fixed blades and an axe (souvenirs from other places I'd visited). I talked to the company and had no issues at all. On another ship I was asked to leave some of the large stuff in a locked safe.

Brought an Endura on a Carnival cruise in 2010. Never had any issues and used it about every hour.

I always carry some kind of traditional. The only cruise I've taken I had a Case Swayback jack with me. Also a Loveless style Drop point hunter in my luggage. Bought a single blade folder from Knives of Alaska during the trip. Never had a problem.

Yes, I always take a SAK and another (cheap folder) whenever I go on a Carnival cruise. I don't take them on shore excursions, however, only use them on board ship.

Never had a problem or issue of any kind, but I have only done this on three cruises.

I took a Buck 110 on a Norwegian Cruise. It came aboard in my checked luggage. If I took knife ashore, it would be confiscated when I reboarded and then returned to me when the cruise was over. I left the knife on the ship when leaving it.

I had a similar (sort of) experience with Norwegian. They required my fixed blade dive knife be held in storage. They had it waiting for me in port if I was diving.
