Anyone ever try rit-dyeing G10 scales?

I just purchased the Spyderco Military Cruwear with grey G10 and was wondering if it would be possible to dye the scales some other color. I've never tried this before on anything, but thought it might be a fun way to customize some of my production knives. I was thinking a bright RED for the Military.

Anyway, any advice by those more experienced than myself would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I have used RIT dye to change the colors on G10. Mine was a desert tan that I dyed to royal blue. I used the RIT liquid and water brought to a boil and dropped the scales, tied to a string, in for about 10 min. It worked very well. I found that the longer you leave it in the darker it will get. I only tried this once, going from a light color to a darker one. Others have done a wide variety of G10 dying with good results. Hopefully they will reply soon.

also if it will work on stock griptillian scales would be cool info... :)
and where to get?

Thanks for this. If you have any photos of that work that would be awesome to check out. My plan is to dye the military the same red as my lionsteel, wallet, iPod, etc. I'll start very faint and gradually adjust.

These coarse peelply 805 scales were earth brown originally, a blah reddish-tan. Just remember that the orig scale color is blended w/ the new-- it is NOT covered.

Maybe a dumb question, but can this be done by dunking the entire knife without removing the scales? I'd rather not void my Spyderco warranty if it can be avoided.

I've seen numerous photos of digicam PM2's that have been dyed, so I had to try it myself.

I heated the water in the kitchen, took it out to the garage to mix it with the dye, and dunked the whole knife in it. After a couple of hours it barely stained the G10. I read some more and tried again a few weeks later. This time I mixed a couple of ounces of vinegar in with the water, and I boiled the knife in the water for 15 minutes. I put the entire knife in the solution and it did not seem to affect it, but it did finally color the G10 the way I wanted it.

I've seen the gray G10 dyed with red and it comes out sort of a pink color. I've seen other colors used such as navy blue and it can come out very dark, almost black. If you use a color that could potentially come out dark, put the knife in for just a few minutes and check it.
