Survival straw. Hoping to get some feedback on this. Thinking about getting a few for each bob kit.
As always, thanks
Danny

i have only used one once but my best friend lives by the things. they work and they are space savers. they have one big down fall though you either have to drink stright from the source, or contaminate your bottle to carry the watter with you. i would say invest a little more money and cubic in.'s and get a katadyn but as i always say different strokes for divverent folks. it just depends on what you like and what you can afford

(but as i just noticed you can afford to be a plat. member so its more what you like lol)

daniel4572, I have used the Frontier brand on hunting and fishing trips, & have one in all of our bags. Instead of contaminating your water bottle, Be Prepared To Survive stocks an aluminum cup that a Nalgene water bottle will fit in. I put the water in the cup to drink, & the bottle stays safe. For $7-$8 & the size, you can't beat them.

Never used one. Been thinking about getting some myself though.

A friend who does mission trips in 3rd world countries uses Life Straws and swears by them but they cost more than these.

I don't know about that particular filter straw, but I think the best bang for the buck for this type is Aqua Mira's Frontier Pro water filter:

Shows relative size when a quart Platypus is rolled up around it...a nice compact combo:

As mentioned, they have two options...drinking right from the water source or contaminating your water container (it will fit theads of most regular plastic water/soda bottles, Platypus water containers and even USGI water flask or Nalgene water flask).

It will filter up to 50 gallons, which is pretty good for its size. I typically carry one in my day hike kits. I still carry iodine or Micropur tablets as well, so if you're really in need of hydration, you can get some boiling or sitting with it's chemical processing time and still be able to drink immediately with the Aqua Mira filter.

so how do you fill the bottle back up? suck from the cup thru the straw and spit into the bottle? i guess that would work.

never seen aluminum cups to fit Nalgene, only stainless.

Nice catch fixer, should be stainless instead of aluminum. As far as re-filling the bottle, I am "assuming" he does not have any M/P or P/A tablets with him to use, hence the cup & straw until he could find a safe source to refill it. Thanks for the correction.

I used the Frontier one on a trip...just to make sure I really loved it as much as the price.
I never thought of using it for more than "drinking". I think it's best use is just to drink from it.

In camp...the Katadyn "Base camp" is the ONLY filter I'll use. pumping is for others...I'll never pump a filter again! I can fill up my base camp and let it drip...by the time I got the hammock set up...or whatever I'm doing for a few minutes...I got a gallon or more of water ready to go.

anyway...I LOVED the Frontier straw. Spit out the first few draws- yuk -....but then it's fine. you can use it alone or in a "found" bottle or container. I have one in my EDC bag, one in every vehicle kit we have..one in the BOB...and I've got a few ready for gifts this Christmas. I added them to Amazon orders all this year.

The thing for me is...I'm gonna use my USGI canteen kit and either use the pills...or boil...or both in a SHTF situation....and I carry a water bottle for EDC...but this is kinda "in the middle" solution.
It may not work for everyone...but it's worked great for me.

There are those "lifesaver bottles"...but WOW are they expensive!
