I just talked with K&G supplies, who is now selling high speed quenching oil. I aksed what their distributor was and they relplied that it is a shell product. I then found a spec sheet on Shell's line of quenching oils here:
http://www.shell-lubricants.com/products/pdf/Voluta.pdf

Has anyone had any experience with these quenchants? From the spec sheet:
Shell Voluta H301 is a highly refined paraffinic
mineral oil blended with additives to impart rapid cooling, excellent oxidation stability and extended service life. Shell Voluta H301 is suitable for use in baths operating between 90 °F and 150 °F when a medium to fast quenching product is required.

H201, which is the slowest they have, is what I'm using right now. It's almost identical to Texaco type A. Seems to work good for stuff like O1, 5160, and L6. Right now I'm waiting for some money, and then I'm going to get 10 gallons each of Parks #50 and AAA. I want the #50 for doing 10xx steels.
The H201 was a free 5 gallon sample a friend of mine got from some dealer and then gave to me. See if you can get free samples. :D

Cool. I am trying to nail K&G into telling me which of the three they sell as "high speed", but the woman on the phone didnt know.....if i find out, I will tell everyone. Theyre selling 5 gallons for 60 bucks, which aint bad.

i found data sheets for all shells quenching oils which tell you the quench speeds. I'd give you the URL, but I don't have it. :) Try a search.

Oops, I guess you already had that in your first post. H401 is the fastest. :D

I recently got some fast quench oil from K&G and it worked very well on 1084 in a clay quench. I used their Turco coating to prevent decarb, then clay coated the spine and soaked at 1500°F for 10 minutes and quenched in 130°F oil.

It came out pretty as can be.

Not bad but not so great either per gallon. 20 gallons of Heatbath oils ran me a little under $220 last fall including shipping. Unfortunately that's close to the minimum order...

20 gallons! I dont even have room for that much oil, haha!

I ordered 5 gallons of this stuff, so ill have a report on how it is....

I thinkI am also going to get some tough quench when i order some anti-scale from brownells. Lots seem to swear by it...
