We have someone wanting axe shetahs made from Horse butt leather. I know its strong and relatively cheap but Ive heard it can be tough to work with? Any opinions, thoughts or pointers? Thanks

Through all my research and experience, there's no real advantage of horse hide over cow hide. Nowhere have I found its cheaper, in most cases a decent grade of horse hide has been exponentially higher in price than top grade cow hide. Beware the cheap stuff.

I dont support the use of horse hide though, it just makes my skin crawl and raises my hackles so I am not an un biased observer. Nope. :p

Horse hide works and tools about the same as good cowhide, assuming it is also top quality horse hide. Horse butts come either hard rolled or soft rolled. Hard rolled is about the stiffness of sole leather and not desirable for most projects. Horse butts odd shapes makes them really hard to use for anything other than the smaller projects or some shorter straps projects.

Having said all that, I am firmly in the camp with Dwayne (leatherman). I don't like using horse hide "just because".

I've worked a little with horse butts and it went pretty well.

I especially like it for making strops...don't need sharpening compound.

I work with it exclusively. It's tougher to cut and mold than cowhide, but that's pretty much it. As far as it being cheaper, that's definitely not true. Also, good luck finding 7-9oz horsehide because all of the suppliers that I use are out and don't have any coming in, so all that's left is 5-7oz

I did find some horse butts going two for somehting like $29. 5-7oz..According to the seller good workable leather. Havent seen it for myself so I cant say..

Hey, is the the Pirate's cove??? Because, there was a gent in a small town in WA that.... oops, we're talking leather. Sorry :)

:D I knew that had to come sooner or later, all this talk about horses butts and all. :D
