In 1991 an elderly forester gave me a double-bit, 3 1/2 pound axe made by a company called Sager. He told me it was one of his favorites. I re-handled it, made a leather sheath for it and have used it on a few horse-pack trips - seems to work fine but I'm not an expert on axes. Anyone out there familiar with this brand? Comments?

One of the best of the old time Northwest logging axes. See my article in the May 2003 Tactical Knives.

They're great. Usually the year of manufacture is stamped on, and there are some really old ones around.

My dad has an old sager axe that is stamped 1948. He got it from his dad (my grandfather) who logged in the west before coming to alaska in 1956 ish. It is 28.5" overall, 8.5" head width, about 4 1/8" blade, and stamped 32. I think the 32 is the weight in oz. Dad says grandpa used to call it a cruser?
