I got a lil knife at a gun show about 20 years ago and it is INCREDIBLY scalpel sharp.

The guy took one of those flat thin "no handle" knives and drilled it and fitted it with some gorgeous wood scales.

The blade is hollow ground and marked SKSSHK SURGICAL STAINLESS
Other side says "Mfg. in Japan. Nat'l Headquarters -USA-

I just got it for the size (small) and looks of the handle.

What is the steel?

I ran "SKSSHK" though google and didn't get a single topic found. So, it's probaly 420 or 440.

i had one until recently stolen, fabulous blade, looking to replace it if anyone out there has one or a lead. see listing under knives wanted.

Well, SK Japan is a steel maker.

The SSHK is probably the steel code.

The "surgical stainless" could have been just a marketing ploy that has backfired (some people still think medical cutting implements are 'sharp') or maybe the steel was actually intended for such use.

I have a Higo no Kami made of some kind of SK steel and it is pretty good. Perhaps you should look to Japan for a similar blade.
