I just saw the victorinox tomo on their website and have mixed thoughts. I'm not sure if the "classic" really needed a redesign, but at the same time I am a little intrigued and tempted to pick one up. No black though...

I have!

And I like it. Its quite controversial for its style, but I like it. Its different, it lacks T&T, but its a nice little package.

My female friends love it. Maybe has to do with the "non-knife"-looking appearance...

Just as for the "fashion designs" of the Classic, I think the Tomo was made to attract female buyers.
If you can do without the tweezers/toothpick, I see it as just another version of the Classic.
And that means I see it as an awesome little thing.

Seriously? No T&T in that package? I would have thought it would be easy to fit those in there somewhere? I agree that its probably more attractive to women.

I'm sorry, but I just can't see it. It's like somebody at Victorinox took something in his morning coffee, had the idea of "Lets make the classic bigger, less keychain friendly shape, and loose two tools in the process."

With the increase in size, they could have added to it, instead of taking away. I'm sure there must be room for a toothpick and tweezers, maybe even a pen.

If that's progress, I'm going back to using a flake of obsidian. :thumbdn:

Carl.

I'm with Carl on this one, and for me , it doesn't even look like a knife, more like a blade stuck in a box
and i thought women like rounded things..imagine that

As a lady Victorinox fan, I'm not fond of the Tomo at all. If they were trying to gear it towards women I'm not sure I get it. I'd much rather have a nice minichamp with some of the new designer classic scales. I'm planning on a custom with just that in the near future. No Tomo for me.

That is just not attractive at all. I'll stick with the traditional designs. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Yeah I didn't even notice the lack of tweezers/toothpick til you guys pointed that out. It's a no go in my book.

from what i've read on their site, its a japanese design/collaboration, with no mention of women targeted design

quote from the site :

"The functions are well known.
The shape is new

Tomo, which means friend and companion in Japanese, gives the characteristic shape of the pocket knife a completely new look, without doing away with any of its tried and tested functions. The small companion combines renowned design from Japan with Swiss precision and quality."

"Modern Art Cutting explores the ancient art of Kirigami (paper cutting) through the Victorinox Tomo. Kirie artists have created stencils to guide you through the processes of creating your own art. The Victorinox Tomo merges Japanese design and aesthetic with Swiss tradition
and precision.

Rob Ryan is a renowned paper cutting artist based in London's East End. He creates art of immense scale and depth – famous for his themes of love and nature. For Victorinox, Rob will be creating bespoke, downloadable stencils. Keep an eye on the site in the coming months where you can also watch his Masterclass video's for hints and tips on how to make your own paper cutting."

 I'm having trouble seeing the point in this one.
Unless we're trying very hard to make a knife not look like a knife.

It looks like Victorinox came up with this design not for the sake of styling, functionality or any tangible improvement, but just to be different. And those kinds of designs generally flop. We see it often in knife design, where someone will come up with a crazy shape that looks like something you would find in a Klingon proctologist's office. Qapla`! They do it just to stand out from the crowd, but it generally meets with little commercial success. I think this Victorinox design will not be well received. I'm always jonesing for new multitools (see generally the Leatherman Wingman and Sidekick, for example), but I'm not tempted to buy this one.

They've used the same squared-off form factor you see in cheap folding keychain knives.

I might purchase one for the novelty and if a particular color catches my eye, but I seriously think this is a mistake.

I usually like things designed in Japan, but this one falls flat. I think the higher ups at Victorinox were swayed by the gentleman who designed these.

I showed the Tomo pic to my wife, not a knife person but who uses and appreciates Victorinox products. Her reaction was not encouraging, from which I make mental note to cross Tomo off my stocking stuffer list. I'll just stick to Classics for that purpose (although personally, I prefer the Rambler.) :)

Maybe that's the point. There's a lot of paranoia about knives. Pull a Classic out of your pocket and someone may think you're a terrorist or Jack the Ripper.
