I sent them out last Friday and am wondering if any have reached their destinations yet. Lemme know...

Everyone else who would like some Samples of various Minerals (the last batch was Charoite, Kobuk Jade, Covellite, Black Jade and Dalmation Jasper, The next batch will be a little different but no less interesting.) and information on them, e-mail me at legendleather@hotmail.com ...I ask for a small "donation" that is refundable with the first order..

Thanks..

Mike

i would like to use jade, but don't you need diamond tools to work with it. if so why don't you have makers send their knives to you and fit the handles to them

Diamond tools are a plus in working jade, but most of the cabbing I have done has been with silicon carbide belts. I have not done much with fitting handles yet, and do not think my skills are developed enough to offer the service. A knifemaker builds a reputation by the quality of his work, and I do not think that I am willing to risk another's reputation as of yet.

I do have a bunch of blanks being made by some friends that I am planning on using for both practice and demonstrative/show pieces.

For makers who do not want to invest in too much equipment, I do offer the service of cutting the slabs to the rough shape of your tang. We have a diamond bandsaw that allows us to cut mineral slabs of up to 3/16" into just about any shape. e-mail me and I'll send a pic of a piece of agate that my roomie did.

Depending on what kind of tang you use, and the equipment you have and your ability to make due, you could possibly get away with just a few diamond dremel bits and a squirt bottle to keep your belt and jade wet. I don't think it would be too hard to make Jade spacers in hidden tangs, and anyone who has worked coral should have some good hints that would apply to lapidary stuff as well.

If all else fails, get a piece of jade, either a sample from me or your local rock shop, and see if you can work it. I also have availabe some minerals that would be easier to work, and some that would be a little less expensive to try out. Rocks ain't for everyone, but they do make your knives stand out when done well.

yek,
i'm intersted in your kobuk jade handles. what is the cost of a pair of jade scales 3/16" x 1 1/8" x 4 1/8". i tried sanding down a peice of marble. so i guess i'll polish it with sil. carbide. i have up to 10,000grt. can you drill holes in them too?

Mag,

I do not want to discuss prices on the forums. E-mail me and we can work it out there. You can get diamond lapidary drills from Daniel Lopacki Company @ 1-888-593-9462.
