I know that some of the guys here go to rendezvous and reenactments and such but do any of you guys go out with say a mountain man setup and just camp for a few days? I'm personally not into dressing up like a mountain man but I think it would be cool to go out with a butcher knife, flint and steel, etc. and live 18th century style.

I use flint and steel for my primary fire starting. I'd love to go all mountain man, but the bugs are vicious around here at times.

I've gone out with a bedroll, flint, knife, steel cup and a bottle of water for 3 days.

No food, no tent, no goretex.

I probably wouldn't do it if severe weather was forecast, but it was a good experience.

Judging from his gear that is pretty much what Rick (Magnussen) does. He is totally old school. Then again, I hear in them days, graduation was completed at grade two :D :D

Not mt man but 1940s era, with all the heavy stuff wool, canvas and such.Old wood canoes and flint and steel for cooking fires.Hard to find gear from that era but getting most of what I need.

I do, about 25 years worth. I have tapered off some since I adopted my grandchildren. Shelter tipi, tarp, one pole. Braintanned leggings and loincloth. Wool capote. Homemade fire irons. Flintlock tradegun or rifle. Bucksaw and hawk. Candle lanterns for light. Some cast iron. Hudson bay blankets. Just more stuff a different way. Made alot of my own gear over the years.

I have always wanted to try but never been able to bring myself to it. I have a woods behind my house and always thought it would be fun to go try. I have a lot of respect for those who can and do though!
