I'm looking to buy one before the ban comes back, but there is so much info out there on the web that it certainly gets confusing. I'm hoping for reliability in case of civil disorder, zombies, etc.

you're going to get a lot of different opinions on this one, i've only had one and it was a wasr that came with 30 round mags and ran like a clock. can't judge them all by mine but i'd buy another in a heartbeat, i ran about 1000 rounds of wolf/and various other cheap ammo through it without cleaning and it never missed a beat. fairly inexpensive and utterly reliable. then i was seduced by the ar15 but that's another story. good luck.
zombies have become quite a problem lately.

i would say get a .50 cal browning machine gun!!! (if you can afford it) those zombies will be running away from u!!!!!

if you can find an egyptian maadi they're worth considering. they went for around $200 new, yet are totally reliable as they are set uo on a egyptian factory built for them by the soviets back during their friendship days in the cold war, before the soviets were expelled.

they say it's one of the models that's truest in specs and built to russian aks's.

the one i had never malfunctioned in over 10 years. i've had much more expensive ones that weren't as slick and reliable.

used, or old stock only. joe

not a thing wrong with maahdis, a maahdi was my 1st AK and has been a really good rifle, only con was the wood was awfull, but i swapped it out a few yrs ago with the brown bakelite east german stocks and it looks fine now, come to think about it i have had 3 different stock sets on it thru the yrs lol, but the bakelite is my fav, i paid $18 for the stock set they run a little more now.

ya should also look on www.theAKforum.net they have a for sale section and i have seen some really cool ones all tricked out for sale very reasonably considering the mods, you know muzzle brakes/comps/folding stocks/railed hand guards/rifles set up to mimic a particular AK like the MPiKMs72 east german, or whatever,

I know many who think highly of the Romanian WASR AK-47. These were made to meet the compliance rules that were set out by the ATF. They have the Tapco G2 trigger group for enhanced reliability and no "trigger slap, and side mount scope mount. Everything I have heard about them has been good and they can be found for less than the $500.00 benchmark you set.

Don't the WASRs take different magazines? I thought they were set up for single stack magazines.

I think you can pick one up off the street in Detroit or Miami areas for about $200 from high school kids. Maybe even less if it has been used recently.

some WASR's were 10 round single stack mag versions but IIRC they are all now set up for std AK 30 rnd mags, the ones for the std mags are good rifles too, and fairly cheap.

what does WASR mean? i heard it means "What A Shitty Rifle" lol but thats more for the ones with the 10 rnd mags lol, i dont know what it really means have heard its an arsenal code which doesnt mean anything.

but they too are good rifles, a couple of buds have them and they are happy with 'em.

Stick to whine and cheese for the shenanigans please. This was a good serious thread until you jumped in.

Saiga. Great stock, but with a little modding it can be turned into a standard AK. I paid $220 for mine new when they were being brought in from EAA. I think Remington is importing them now and the price has jumped quite a bit, but still in your price range I think.

My .223 after a bit of work.

Well, it looked more like this when I bought it for $220.

I took out the old trigger group, and cut holes for a new group behind the mag-release, so I could install a pistol grip. I installed a Red Star adjustable group there (Best drop in AK trigger ever). I added an ergo pistol grip and replaced the rest of the stock hardware (T-6 buttstock, Galil forestock). Finally, I cut a feed ramp, drilled and tapped, and installed, so it now accepts Galil, Wieger, and a few other mags with a little modding to the mags.

That of course added to the cost, but they are excellent rifles stock. They are Russian made in Izhevsk, in the factory where Mikhail Kalashnikov works. Chrome lined barrels. Good initial triggers. You can get them in 7.62x39, .223, .308, , .410, 20 guage, and 12 guage.

An AK is on my gun list for sure.. There is a company selling new US made ones w/ warranties at the gun shows here for not much more than $500 if I recall..
