Bit Torrent is the latest in the peer-to-peer file sharing methods. It has a more distributed sharing model so it poses less cost and burden in the file sharing process while also making it harder to sue into oblivion as happened with Napster.
To further hamper the RIAA, many of the torrent connection sites are by invitation only.
