I posted a similar question on the general discussion board, but the response I got may have been from Mr. McCurdy (just seemed too glowing).

anyone know about McCurdy kukris?

I like the full tang design, though they obviously aren't traditional.

One last question: Horn Handle vs. wood handle - any thoughts?

Welcome, Scotchleaf:)

Since your request is more about McCurdy's khuk than it is about HI, I moved it over to the off-topic Cantina. If more HI talk pops up in the thread, then we'll move it back. No sweat:)

To be honest, I have never handled nor heard of a McCurdy khukuri. To my knowledge, I don't know if any serious discussion about his work has sprung up in the Cantina before. It sure looks nice with its fuller and shape:thumbup: However, a khuk purist wouldn't call it a "real" khukuri as it is missing the cho and has choil in its place. Like I said, it looks very nice. Maybe someone with more experience will be along soon to give some imput.

Once again, Welcome:D

Edit to add: Horn vs. Wood is personal preference in my opinion. Some feel that horn is a little more "grippy" than wood. Personally, I like wood. I find that it cleans up nicely, can be easily sealed, and is more easily customizable to fit my hand should i want to mod the handle.

It *looks* like the person who made it knew what they were doing. If they got the heat treat right, it will probably work. I haven't heard anything about this person/company though. Any more info?

I've owned one. Wasn't bad. Thick and heavy and choppy. I gifted it to my nephew. He pops into Ramanon every so often and sells a batch.

I've got the previous model..... it serves us well, for chopping up kindling (lot safer than a single-handed axe, btw.)

I have that model. It's well made, and the grip is very comfortable. As noted, not traditional. No cho, chakma, karda, among other differences. I like mine a lot.

Comparing it it HI khuks? Tough. They both do a good job, when compared in the same size/weight classes. I like the culture/tradition that the HI's bring with them, and the community (these guys here) that come along with them.

I have made the pants for a couple and liked them...I prefer the HI but I would not feel undergunned if I happened to have a McCurdy kukris on me

I just got that model and MAN! what a blade, it is a massive chopper
I have never gotten such value in my life for a blade, between it and its awesome sheath for sub $100, I'm getting another! if you are looking for a thick heavy vs. size chopper look no further in any knife and no I don't know mccurdy from adam...

I have a couple of his blades and they are pretty nice. He has them made to order by Khukri House. They are solid and come sharp, but seem to lack some of the soul HI blades have. I've also found the traditional handle design to be more comfortable to chop with, but that is a personal preference and others may not feel the same.

Good looking blade- handle looks like it would hurt after chopping a while.

I prefer wood to horn.

Owned a CAK McCurdy with brass guard. It is not as well finished as my HI khuks. And the blade is not straight. If held you can see the blade and the handle is not in line. Banana shaped slightly to the left.

How does one straighten a khuk :(

Hammer it?

I've got that model as well. It doesn't seem to hold an edge as well as any of my HI Khuks, nor does it feel as lively in my hand. Those are pretty subjective measures though, and I certainly don't feel that the McCurdy was a bad purchase.

Got any pics of the pants.I just picked one of these up.I really like it although my experience this type of or this design is limited to this one.I started out wanting a C.S. Ghurka Kukri but changed my mind for this knife because of the lack of the traditional look.Wich is what I was looking for.I believed all the hype about the H.I. but didn't care for the looks of them.I think that i have recently changed my mind though.I have been researching and looking at the M43 for about two weeks now.I think I would really like this model and hope i could find a used 1.I can wait have lots a knives and time but I am pretty sure I will end up owning one.The Mccurdy is exzactly what I wanted when I first started looking at this style of knife. However those sheaths that seem to be some what typical with all kuks aren't my bag.I haven,t used this knife but I believe it will do all I want and more. The handle feels great and fit and finish is good IMO.I have even thought about getting a second one but I think the 43 is next on my list for now. There is a pic of my MCcurdy with a couple of hawks I own over in the hawks and axes forum.
