Here is a group pic of my old Micarta handled Esquires and a little micarta 505.
These are all users and the flash from the camera really shows the bolster scatches! I need to find a Duke model 500 in Micarta and I'm not sure if they made one or not, But the 503 with micarta would be nice too. My 503 is a wood handled later model. Does anyone know what year the 501 was introduced? What year the 501 went to the 2 pin handles?
Also, It would be interesting to have a list of all the Micarta handled models that were made.I have 3 -501's and 1-505.I need a Model 500 and a 503 in micarta. I have never seen the maroon micarta on a 110, But I would love to have one with the older blade steel. Anyway, These are some of my favorite knives!

...Hi Seaplane...Here's some info on the 501's I managed to snag from various sources who know a hell of a lot more than I do...LOL...Hope it helps ya out...:)

The first Buck model 501 Esquire retailed for $18 and started shipping in February of 1975. The blade steel was 440C and the bolsters and liners were one piece stainless steel. Until about 1986 the perimeters of the knife were polished. There are some earlier 501’s without polished perimeters known to exist. The tang stamp was and still is the familiar three lines: BUCK/501/U.S.A. The word Buck was in script letters until 1985 when it was changed to block letters. Also in 1985 the name was changed to Squire. Esquire Magazine already had the name so Buck decided to drop the E at the front of the name. The handles were burgundy linen micarta that Buck called Red Buckarta. Three rivets fastened the handles, the center one being the rocker rivet. In 1978 the center rivet was covered by the handles and no longer exposed. These early Esquires did not come with a sheath and they were not available as an option.

Sea, Welcome. The 501 first came out in Feb.1975 and yes the 503 Prince was made w/ micarta in 1977.In 1978 the 500 Duke came out and 1979 the 505 Knight and 506 Lady Knight as it was first called, later renamed the White Knight w/ white micarta slabs. Then in 1980 the final one came out the 507 Ultima I w/ mother of Pearl handles. These last two are hard to come by.They all came w/ stainless steel bolsters and liners polished and rocker bar.To top off the package a 440C polished blade which makes for a classy knife.A great series to collect.Have fun. DM

The use of old English script stamping really looks classy on this model.I have two early 501's w/ sheath's and the rocker rivet was hid in 1977.DM

Thanks guys! Thats way more than I knew. I bought my first 501 in 1976. I remember paying around $18 for it and had to drive about 20 miles to get it. I have never seen the 506 or 507. I have seen the Grand Slam series . I really like the 440C Blade steel.
So, I think I'm going for the Duke next. I have seen a few of them lately with micarta. The 503 is another story. I have not seen a 503 with Micarta. I also have never seen the White Knight! I will definately keep an eye out for one of them!
I'd love to see some pics of all of those! Thanks again for the info!

A black factory micarta 110 and a custom "skinny" red micarta 110.

Seaplane,I've sent Flatlander a picture of all 6 of the 500 series and he'll post it when he gets a chance.I think Darryls has a early 501 w/ exposed rocker rivet.DM

Here's a 501 with micarta scales... the resolution is not the best. Dates from the mid 70's

Buck501a.jpg

here are the 4 main types of micarta available in late 70's through the 80's
the black is most commonly found, ivory white paper micarta is next
red micarta is highly sought after and the brown is rather hard to find

i am positive there was also a white white linen or cotton
and a grayer black canvas from earlier like the early 124's had
also i understand there were some few other colors used but are rather hard to find.

Thanks for posting those pics guys! I guess I've lived a sheltered life, Because I have never seen any of the Micartas other than the Maroon. I would love to have a white 501! I also feel the need to find myself an older 110 with micarta! I've seen the Grand Slam set, But never any individual 501's with green or brown micarta.

Seaplane,The white and green micarta 501 were not made at Buck unless in the custom shop.DM

green or jade and blue are colors i have not heard much on..
there were some white correan 110's at times..
but lots of non-conventional things were done there
as it says in the dvd on custom shop knives
they would jest "walk through and pick up stuff...f"
and in one lecture i was at they said they did some 'trading' ..hummm...
could be any thing out there!!!!

I tool this picture a while back. Thought it would be cool to see knives Buck has done over the years in Maroon micarta.

More great pics! I think a maroon 110 with some s30v or cpm 154 would be a great future Buck Project! That big bowie looks nice in Maroon micarta!
I was watching a white micarta 506 on the auction site the other night, But I was out bid!
Joe, one of my 501's was rebladed and reconditoned by the good folks at Buck knives about 7 or 8 years ago. I carry it and use it quite a bit. The thing about the Buckarta handle Is it always polishes right back up like new. Maybe someday the custom shop can offer a "Heritage Buck series" just like the 70's knives!

Joe, A tastefully arranged photogaph.Mind if I name them? The 6 steak knives are the Windsor set bottom right, bottom center 124 Frontiersman, above it the Empress Trio, above that Akonua,Kalinga, right is 4 of the 500's,Duke,Esquire,Prince and Knight.
Thanks for posting.DM

Mike Kerins,I really like both knives in the picture you posted. That early 112 has always to me been a looker. It took me "years" of searching before I found mine. Then I always enjoy your stories of law enforcement days when you carried that model.DM
