Anyone has news...

A friend of our got a call from Atlanta today and it seems that Luciano and Rodrigo passed the JS test. In adition he said Sfreddo was awarded best of something prize for a bowie he took to the show. Does anyone have more info please? Thanks!

Sfreddo won the Peck award for the best submitted JS knife. Not only that, he's the first smith ever to take first and second place in that award.

I got a chance to see the award winner on Sunday, as it wasn't on his table the prior times I passed by. I think he called it his Art Noveau knife? BRB maybe you know which knife that is from the name. An large integral hunter that has to be seen to be believed. I can't explain the detail since I don't know enough of the terminology to. But flow, contrast of texture, contrast of color, understated elegance in design. It was all there. Hopefully someone will have a photo of it. I would have taken one but stupid me had left my camera in the car.

I believe that was the midsize integral with extensive stippling aound the handle. Really exceptional, unique knife and the awesome bowie was second I guess. He had some exceptional knives, thats for sure.

It wasn't stippling around the handle so much as stippling along the spine and underside of the exposed tang. Outlining the stippling were thin strips of the steel polished and raised so you had a contrast of blackened stippled steel against thin polished and "white" looking steel. It was quite a stunning piece to my eyes.

One Sfreddo bowie really knocked me out had mammoth scales set in to sort of an intergral handle and a carbon steel blade about 9" long. It had very fine detail work all along the exposed spine, gorgeous filework. It was superb! Was that the winner? Anybody get any photos of their stuff? I don't know the test results.

Umm, isn't that around the handle :)

Umm, yeah...but...but...but...

Ummm...I didn't want people thinking it was stippling on the wood when it was on the steel. Yeah, that's it.

Interesting. Eye of the beholder and all that I guess, because by the time I saw it it was already sold, and I would have paid what he told me the asking price was. It would have been equal to the most expensive knife I'd ever bought. Meanwhile there are MS bowies that cost more and many have drooled over and wanted to own that I would not have paid the same amount for as the Sfreddo, though they probably would do better in the aftermarket than his knife.

Thanks for the info guys.

I am not sure what PECK means. I know some of the prizes of the show, but not all of them.

What I was told is that the bowie got first place. I got a picture in my HD of the first art noveau knife, but this was a camp knife solt a while ago, so I figure it was not this one.

I am glad you liked the Brazilian knives. It makes me feel very proud of my countrymates.

The Peck award is given to the JS candidate who submitted the best knife to be judged. This is quite the achievement - pass on my congrats for me to Rodrigo.
