I'm looking to add a 858OT to my collection. This is a big, 4 and 1/2 inch, stockman that usually comes with a belt sheath. Looks to be a serious working knife. Does anyone have and or use this model? Id like to hear your opinions before I buy. I've been buying and using larger slipjoints lately and this one seems to the largest stockman I can find.

OTguy,
Welcome to the group.
The 858OT "Lumberjack" is largest OT stockman and definitely the heaviest. Doubt it be good for fine whittling jobs but if you need a big handle and good cutting blades, this is the one. Last production run was 1986 when it listed for $36.95
I've seen them on EBay. I have 2. The first was in pretty tough shape which of course caused me to go after a minty one. Its defintely an addiction.

The knife in question is a dandy and I am sure it would suit your purpose. It is the largest knife of that pattern ( stockman that Schrade made in the OT series ) If I recall correctly and it is the model I am thinking of. I am going by memory. However it is not the largest Stockman that they ever made. During the few years when Schrade owned IXL Geo Wostenholm & Son ( Sheffield England ) In I believe the late 70 tys till around 1980. They produced a limited edition IXL 5" stockman. Personally I feel that some of the lnives produced during this period were among the nicest they ( SCHRADE ) ever made. This model had fine wooden polished handles, nickle silver slanted bolsters the shield is etched with 1787 IXL 1980 in a banner. The knives were numbered and hallmarked. They came in a display box and unlike the 858 OT almost always seem to be in new condition when you find them. ( I guess the reason for this is that most people display them and feel they are too nice to use ) Blades are etched. This particular knife is an addiction to me I have several. The feel of the knife as well as the quality is amazing. I have bought them off ebay for 25 to 100 dollars. Sometimes you get lucky on ebay. In any event you might want to consider this model. I have included some pictures. Either way you will have a great user. Tangs are marked IXL SCHRADE WOSTENHOLM. LT

Oh yes. 4 1/2" and five inch stockmans? Beautiful, and yep, those would need a sheath.

Wow LT, thats a stockman! I'll have to keep my eyes open for one of those. I'll let you guys know how I make out as the auction ends soon for the 858 .

Just a quick update: I won the auction and tried to pay with paypal, but the sellers paypal account was mucked up. We worked out the details and I sent a check, all the way to Cali, so I'm thinking it will be a week or two before I have knife in hand. Good thing I have a few other knives to play with in the meantime.

I'm glad you won that auction!
I was looking at it after your post........but you had first dibs!

Cheers,
Kap

Thanks for not pumping the price up on the auction, my wife has been "watching" my knife expenditures lately :( There's one of those 5in. stockmen that LT posted about coming up if you are interested, looks reasonable so far.

No problem OTGUY you had first rights........I wouldn't butt in..........ya i hear ya my wife was just asking me how much todays delivery cost me and how much have I spent in the last few months.......
Thanks for the tip on that big slippie........I am assuming its on ebay?

Cheers,
Kap

The knife finally arrived yesterday. This knife had been worked hard by its previous owner and not shown much attention. The main blade was missing about 1-2 mm of its tip, all the blades needed sharpening, the spey blade was REALLY dull(looked like it had been used as a scraper/screwdriver), and the whole knife needed cleaning. First thing I did was to take a file and put a point back on the main blade, this only took a few strokes and didn't change the profile to much. Then came the sharpening. The main and sheepsfoot weren't to bad, they both looked to have been badly sharpened on a coarse stone at sometime, but both blades had a bevel and something that resembled a edge. 30 minutes on each blade with 2 different grit diamond stones put a edge back on them. For the spey I had to get out the coarse stone and rebevel the blade to where I could put it back on the finer stones. After getting a good edge on all 3 blades, I finished them on a loaded strop and all shave nicely now. I then put some Rem-oil on the pivots and worked that in and cleaned some of the grit and gunk out of them. This put some snap back into the blades. The 858 in a definate handful of stockman, the handle is a big as many fixed blades, and should prove to be a serious worker. I'm glad I was able to bring this old knife back to order. Its in my pocket now and I'm just looking for a excuse to cut stuff, thats what OT's were made for.

Seems like you brought a good user back to life, enjoy it and I hope the walk and talk gets better with use.

Good for you, OTguy. Glad it worked out for you and glad the old knife has a new lease on life. I love a knife story with a happy ending.
