Trying to decide between Handles Sabre or standard. Micarta or stacked leather leaning towards Micarta because of the weather resistance. Any pics or experiences with this model would be appreciated.

I assume you mean the Model 1-7. For using, the micarta works very well. This is basically a fighting knife and I find the 125 more useful for outdoor activities. But it certainly is a very cool blade! I don't own a stacked leather Blackjack classic. But have never heard negative comments about the quality or workmanship by Bark River on this knife.

You are correct I meant the model 1-7 and yes the 125 looks like it would be more suited for the outdoors. I already have a few fixed blades for that purpose. The 1-7 is a model I have lusted after for a long time finally going to get one I will most likely get a Micarta handle.

I find there is something special about the old, original type stacked leather. Maybe because I'm old too . The stacked leather military Ka-bars survived most weather (didn't do so well in the jungle, at least in Nam :grumpy:).

I lusted for it too after handling it at a knife store in VA. I have no complaints. It pretty much is a wall hanger for me as I don't use it for much of anything, but I love to handle it and my lust continues. Mine is green canvas micarta. There are fancier handles available from at least one dealer especially if it is not going to be used much. Not sure if they are a BF supporter, so I won't mention the name. Be glad to PM you with that info. The sheath is a little floppy unless you tie it down to your leg.

I think I know which dealer you mean. I am not very good at collecting so it will get used unless I get it in hand and I am unhappy with it. Doubt it though the leather handles are classics for sure.Haven't owned a leather handled blade in a long time. Decisions :-)

It would not be a typical woods blade, but it might well be a good choice for a SHTF blade where self defense might be an issue. It is just a really cool knife and in the Randall design tradition. I have a couple Randalls along this line too which never got used. They are all what I consider fighting knives like the Randall Models 15 and 16, but the Model 15 (Airman) falls into the BK-2 kind of flavor and would be a reasonable last ditch blade. So, I do buy stuff just because it's cool even if I know I don't have much real world use for it. But I try to buy good quality.

Micarta, it won't rot or really react at all to much of anything unless you set out to destroy it.

You do know that there are some with a bolt and nut sticking out of the bottom of the handle, and some where the tang is completely hidden? I prefer the hidden tang "Saber" version, it looks cleaner and is more comfortable to use. Also, it doesn't have a nut and bolt sticking out of the bottom ;)

If you don't need, or want, the full 7" blade the Model 5 is the same knife, but with a slightly shorter blade. I prefer it because the Model 5 balances perfectly for me, while the 1-7 feels slightly 'blade heavy'. What I do like about the 1-7 is that it is extremely light for a 7" blade, and very fast in the hand. I can't imagine not having one of each, they really are incredibly underestimated knives.

The Randall patterned Blackjacks are incredible cutters. They're also easy to maintain, the convexed edge requires minimal stropping to get back to hair popping sharp.

It would not be a typical woods blade

Definitely not 'typical' but still very good.

I use mine all the time, it's very useful. Surprisingly, the double handguard doesn't get in the way when using the choil to choke up on the blade for fine cutting and carving. I've never handled a lighter 7" bladed field knife.

I usually bring my Model 5 because it takes up less space on my belt. The Model 5 replaced my Bravo 1 as my "go to" woods knife. I like being able to sweat all over the handle and not have a rusty tang, as it is not exposed, and I have yet to discover any sign of "weakness" from the hidden tang. I read somewhere that BRKT heat treats the blade and tang differentially so that the tang remains softer and less brittle to avoid breaking like certain stick tang designs are known for.

Any pics or experiences with this model would be appreciated.

Here's my Model 5 and 1-7, in different light:

Nice Matthew I just saw your pics in another thread I knew you would post them here Thanks.

I'm not new to Blackjack I've had a few last one was a Tac Op's didn't keep it long the handle just didn't fit my hand.

My camp/wood's bummin' knife for about 20 years was an Effingham 1-7 (stacked leather handle) that I had removed the top guard from. That thing cut like a laser. As I've gotten older, I've come to prefer smaller blades. Now I carry a Bravo 1, BHK Essiac or GSO 4.1.

To answer your question, I've owned a bunch of Blackjacks and Bark Rivers. I love the look and feel of a waxed stacked leather handle, but if I were buying it specifically for outdoor use, micarta would be my first choice by a long shot.

BlackJack HALO Attack and Model 1-7

The Blackjack Model 1-7 is a SAVAGE knife.

I particularly like the saber handle, but it's not available in stacked leather.

Mike is that the one you modded the guard ?

I modded the guards on both of those.

But Bark River will do it for you as part of a SPA treatment.

Big Mike, yes the 1-7 is a SAVAGE knife just like the Randall M16 Special Fighter. It is part is what makes the knife really cool! I actually prefer the guards like the 125. But they are there for a purpose in the fighting arena. I can't see batonning a 1-7, but I'm sure you could. :)

I think it would be right at home in the video in the current Rambo thread. :D

I must confess I usually grab the HALO for batonning,

...but the Model 1-7 is up to the task.

On either the swede grind does eat up batons.

I prefer micarta over leather as a handle material and I prefer a full tang over a stick or hidden tang. The shape of the Sabre handle does fit me really well though and I like the looks of it over the standard.
