These things look kind of cool. Whats your experience with them. Can they handle camp chores like splitting wood.

They are nice, they can split wood, have a good tip, comfortable handle and good sheath. I have a #3 carbon and like it. The edge that came with mine needed work to get it sharp. I like my custom knives better but think they are a good value for their price point. Here is a link to my recent review on one:

They are a very good hunting knife. They would split wood but they are not really designed for that kind of work IMO. However the No. 4 survival knife is much heavier built.

Awesome knives! I have the #1 with carbon blade and love it. I have batoned with it no problems(nothing too big, kindling sized pieces) and it excells in the camp kitchen area as the curve gets your hands off the cutting surface.

Grab one, you'll love it!

The stainless is 4110, similar to 440. I find it holds and keeps an edge very well.
One big caveat, these knives come with a pretty sub par factory edge, I have put a convex on mine and they all slice VERY well now. A lot of people give them a so-so rating because of this, it makes me want to write a letter to the company.

I have the Mini Skinner and the boat knife which I got as a very fun kit, both are excellent knives.

i have a #4 survival version with a custom kydex sheath made by on scene tactical. bomb proof combination. the knife is excellent and has similar properties to 440A. Easy to field sharpen and maintain especially with a kydex sheath. I added a pouch to my sheath that holds a small combination stone and a magnesium fire block. Great knife. The ergonomics makes it excellent for skinning but also for slicing. i've batoned mine through some wood and had no problems with it.

if you do get one, i highly suggest a kydex sheath from on scene tactical. great guy to deal with to boot.

cheers

Here are my two #3s ,one rosewood, one micarta in stainless, both just returned from the factory to get a flat grind. Sorry for the bad pics.

Great for camp knives , hunting , food prep , bushcraft etc.
I find they hold an edge well ,but I don't baton them. ( I use my Wetterlings for that) One I bought, the other was a gift. Just coincidence they were both #3s. I got micarta put on the newer one. My rosewood one has seen a lot of Mr. sharpening stone , as I used it a lot.:D

How much to get them flatground?
I found one on ebay recently and am contemplating sending mine in.

I owned a #3 and a #4 once uon a time...

I liked the design and build quality but was very disapointed with the edgeholding of the stainless steel - reminded me of a 440a dive knife. I'm inclined to think a carbon must be the way to go, maybe convexed. The #4 sheath also had issues with the retaining strap being cut by the blade. Still, the flatground carbon option calls to me.

Sounds like a great overall rig! Would love to see pics if you get a chance sometime.

Good bang for the buck field knife, Very good for finer tasks - field dressing and food prep. Here' my carbon 1 with a stainless folder:

Excellent knives; the original design won a prestigious award. The elliptical blade cuts and slices very well and makes a good skinner. It is not a chopper, tho'. I believe the carbon steel is akin to 1080, quite tough and takes a good edge, but not as good as Carbon V/50100 or 52100.

Holy, that's pretty cheap. Factory seconds?

Not factory seconds. That was the prices I paid to have my two #3 boat knives modified. ( Not including shipping)
One knife was $60 here about ten years ago, the other a gift from a CDN soldier.

I love my Grohmanns! Aside from my BK-9, they are the only production knives that I use these days.

My no. 1 (flat grind) sees regular use on the trail and in the kitchen, and it's a great all-around wilderness knife. Same goes for my no. 2 (carbon steel), which is my go-to knife for fishing trips. My no. 4 was, for many years, my favourite survival knife. They are definitely classic blades.

Pictures!
