Anyone have an opinion on the Spyderco Assist rescue knife?

It's the rescue knife I keep in my gear bag! It is one of the only knives I've seen that actually succeeds at filling the "jack of all trades" rescue knife role pretty well. I consider it a tremendous value that could one day save a life (or several). Good luck.:)

I carried one when I was doing Fire Fighting. What I liked most about it was that it was still easy to open with one hand, even with gloves on. I can't even count the number of seat belts that knife cut. It is a great knife. There where a couple times where I could have used a pointed tip, but the majority of the time I like the blunted nose.

In general, it's nice.

Two minor issues I have with it:
Too big and bulky for easy pocket carry -- it's huge!
There's a little downward spike at the tip that makes sharping the plain edge segment with my waterstones awkward. I think it'd be better off as all serrated.

Otherwise... easy to open, comfortable to hold, the scalloping intended for safe rope cutting works well on thick rope -- thinner still needs the traditional way.

I love the Assist, though I don't own one (yet). I agree that it might feel a little big for pocket carry, but if I were to get it, I'd keep it for the car. It is damn ugly, but once it's in your hands, like most Spydercos, it instantaneously becomes beautiful. If you got the funds for it and its features seem to fit what you're looking for, stop thinking and buy it.
