Considering buying a Cold Steel 3V SRK or 3V Ak47 Field Knife. Does anyone have any experience using these fields out in the field for moderate to hard use?

Also before anyone recommends Survive!Knives they are over budget for me, would love one but don't have the funds for even a 2nd, anyways would probably be hesitant to use such an expensive knife.

Thanks.

I don't, but I have have been curious about the SRK. I like my Bark Rivers in 3V, but I have been afraid to pull the trigger on Cold Steel's 3V.

cold steel typically has their steels done very well on heat treat. ive got them in vg1, aus8, sk5, o1, 4116, cts xhp, and maybe another. many examples of these and none has been a let done and many hold edge better than competitors knives in same steel. so id have no fear of cold steel 3v. i plan on adding one when they make a trail master or recon scout in it.

Same here... Waiting on a 3V Recon Scout

I have a master hunter in 3v and it's just as good if not better than most. I highly recommend any steel made by them except maybe their vg1 or aus8

I have a 3v Recon Tanto, not a Scout, but still a great example of their 3v and I hope a 3v Scout comes soon.--I wrote about the RT months back. I was pleased then and since then I really have beat the f... out of it. Wood, plastic, zinc nails, you name it. The black DLC of course will wear in spots after a while, but it is worlds better than the old school black paint-like coating like on the sk5 and o-1 RS for example. I'm not certain if the 3v RS is going to be dlc but I hope so.

I have nothing bad to say about it--both the knife and Cold Steel's 3v. It holds up very well and sharpening is not too difficult. It's tough and resilient. I was disappointed at first that the Recon series is no longer made in Seki City, but after actually using it, that was not an issue. The SRK should be as nice as the Tanto. Same with the AK.

ive used a master hunter in 3v cutting branches and stuff very sharp blade that didn't need sharpening afterwards. just got a 3v srk going to test it out next week in the woods of eastern tenessee

The short answer is : Cold Steel 3V heat treat =

I reground this knife (Cold Steel Pendleton Hunter in 3V)

reground it thinner to be like this (see photo bellow). I was cutting up some very heavy double wall card board boxes and accidentally ran into a big O’ staple. I was sure I dinged the edge. When I looked later there was no sign that I had hit any thing. NO PROBLEM.

ha ha I am sure I put a notch in that staple.
YMMV meaning you still need to be careful with any edge tool or you MAY damage it.

:) The SRK in 3V would undoubtedly be superior , but the same knife in SK5 is about 3X cheaper . Just sayin' , if you want a hard use beater that you don't have to worry about . If money is no concern then go 3V for sure .

I ordered my SRK in SK5 a week ago and just received it a couple days ago, totally worth the price. And decided and just put a Ak-47 Field Knife on Order.
