I was debating buying an Ipod touch out of my Christmas money and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the 8gb version?

iPod touch is essentially the iPhone without the cellular antenna and bluetooth. It is a great media player and has a gorgeous large screen for watching movies (you need to convert them but there are a lot of free tools to do this). Very slim design slips easily into pockets. The ability to surf the web at WiFi access points or in your home is nice and quite convenient, and there are a lot of fun time-wasting applications and games out there like Rolando and Space Deadbeef.

Unless you get a pair of remote headphones (Apple in-ear earbuds are good for this) it is a little fiddly to change tracks vs. a normal media player that has physical buttons, though. That's really the only caveat I can think of. If you have more specific questions I would be happy to answer them.

can you get rid of all the games and crap and just have a fast light mini wireless web browser with it??

Having both the Old GSM iPhone, and the older Original iPod touch, I can say GET the apple heaphones, yes there are better headphones out there, but the ability to switch tracks pause and play on a button is great, now that I think about it, although over priced and has a bulky mic Shure Inc. Makes a iPhone headset adapter. They are pretty neat if you're touch screen friendly. Takes some getting used to and fat fingers plus really dryed cracky fingers don't work as well as moist fingers.

It does make a decent WiFi web browser, but it's not the best, and lacks many 3rd party software support like flash.

It just comes with a few things preinstalled, and yes, you can use just the browser. Installing stuff does not seem to make the browser any slower.

I just got one not too long ago and like it a lot. I love the ability to search my music very easily. I don't browse the internet off if it all that much, but it is a nice to have.

The one thing that I don't like is that the volume is not that easy to adjust without going through a few different layers of screens. On the other iPods all you do is turn the wheel and the volume adjusts. If there is an either way on the touch, please someone let me know.

I got the 16gig touch first gen as a refurb for 199.00 - not a bad deal at all.

myright,

While playing music, you just double-click the home button and it will pop up a window (or if it is 'locked,' it will show a modified locked screen) where you can adjust the volume. It's the slider on the bottom.

New iPod touch (2nd gen) features hardware volume controls like the volume rockers you see on most cell phones.

I have my 16Gig iTouch (1st gen) sitting right next to me and I use it all the time. It's perfect for me to have (college student) so I don't always have to lug my computer around to get access to online information, email, pictures, calendar, contacts and lots more. The games are a lot of fun and most of them are free. The touch screen is great and I definitely recommend it!

There is even an app called Fring (its free) that allows you to use Skype, and therefore if you attach a Mic to it, you can use it as a phone as long as you have Wifi! Lots of Apps also allow you to use IM applications and send SMS messages.

I have the same one and I love it!

anyone have the one with the built in speakers?

looking at the 32 gig, but haven't been able to demo the newest model.

I got one a couple of months ago and I love it but my advice is to get the 16gb if you can afford it you will be amazed at how fast it fills up.I like listening to podcast on mine.I have a set of KOSS earbuds you can't pause or skip tracks with it but it does have a slider to adjust the volume.

I was speaking to a neighbor the other day and she has had the iphone for about a year and has really grown to loathe it. She mentioned something about the typing function being lousy and not typing in what she wants, not sure if thats the only thing she doesn't like about it but its worth looking into before you get one.

They look pretty useful though, I think my dad has one and loves it. :)

Most people learn to type pretty fast and accurately on the virtual keyboard. I have written a good number of fairly lengthy forum posts on it, for instance.

I think the problem was that she was typing too fast on it and the ipod software was sort of guessing what she was typing and putting in really weird words.
Not sure exactly how it works.

It is really funny because I have had the iPhone for a year and it has learned the quirks of my writing and usually guesses the right words. It also helps that I have been touch typing for over a decade now and thumbtyping for about half a decade (Treo, etc).

Obviously a physical keyboard is much more usable than a virtual one but the iPhone's virtual keyboard is really the best in the business and offers a fair compromise between size/screen estate and usability. I can type with one hand or two on the iPhone, and in landscape mode I can crank out words pretty quickly.

I don't know how skilled your friend is at typing or how fast she does so but I would suggest that her experience is a rarer one seeing how I know very many people with iPhones who do not find the typing experience to be flawed. There is a little bit of an adjustment period while you adjust to the iPhone and the iPhone adjusts to you but really I think Apple has come up with a compelling system here that works for the majority of users. What you have to be careful about is what part of your finger touches the screen as it is touch and not pressure sensitive. Once you get used to that you are clear sailing.

Yeah you're probably right, it was the first I'd heard of such a problem so it can't be a huge one. Reading up on it, it really does look like good software. I think it's likely that she has a sloppy technique and the predictive text just gives her screwy words because she types a few keys at once.
