Hillbillenigma,
Jerry VanCook will be carrying the Dawn Warrior in Peru so look for something from him in the future. My personal carry (sheath blade) on this trip is going to be a little utility blade from Ed Schott. Just got it in by FedX this morning. Looks to be a nice piece and a perfect size for daily carry. My wife has already fell in love with it and wants it for a small kitchen knife.
I've used a lot of TOPS knives and judging from the feel and size of the Dawn Warrior it would probably become my favorite carry blade from TOPS.
I'm also taking this monster folder that TOPS has come out with and a couple other folders.
I guess what impresses me so much about TOPS is Mike Fuller. They don't come any more honest or nicer than him. There's people in the world that you instantly trust when you meet them, Mike Fuller is one of those guys. When I first ran across his stuff, I said 'gimmick,' but after using it I made a public apology (Tactical Knives article - July 2000) to him for judging a book by its cover.
With that said, he makes a lot of knife designs that I don't like but so does Newt Livesay, Cold Steel, Spyderco, and just about everyone else in this business. Knives have personality and everyone's personality is different. What I really look for in any maker is consistency and desire to make a good product and not just make something for the sake of generating a profit.
As far as reviews, a lot of stuff we carry with us is not just for magazines. Most of the makers and manufacturers are truly interested in whether a new design works for us so they ask us to give them feedback. Of course all we can ever offer is our opinion on something....and again what works for us may not be what works for the majority.
We are in no way experts in the knife and blade field but we do appreciate something that works, and folks who are open to the idea of change for the better.
Jeff
