Anyone have any information on the Tibetan short sword?

I'm looking to make my first sword purchase soon, and naturally I turned to Himalayan Imports first because I own one of their khukuris and already know the phenomenal toughness/quality of their products. I was hoping to get something that could be wielded with one hand, and the Tibetan short sword appears to fit that criteria best, although endless searching has turned up little information about it. Anyone have any experiences with one?

Your input is much appreciated.

I had one briefly before gifting it to someone who could appreciate it more. Now, that is not a slight against the sword at ALL. This particular forumite simply had better use for it as he has been heavily martially trained where I come from the school of waving the pointy end at the bad guy and shriek like a girl:o

It was an incredibly robust sword. Plenty of thickness to the spine, chiruwa tang, steel guard. I honestly wish I had another one:)

That said, I don't know if it was what I would call a one-handed sword. Once again, I'm not a swordsman. However, I'm fairly fit and doing any what I deem "classical" sword movements was cumbersome with one hand.

Still, a fantastic sword. I just maneuver my Everest Kat better. My FAVORITE HI sword in my collection is the Manjushree. That puppy zips and thrusts like crazy:)

I've found the short Tibetan sword a little heavy to use one handed. The original handle was gone when I bought it so I made a 9 1/2 inch wooden handle for it. This makes it much easier to use two handed. My main use for it is to protect my dogs from cats while trekking. You may also try a Uddha sword, shorter and lighter but not as strong. Mine snapped in half with heavy use.

Thanks the information guys, I sorted of figured it might be too heavy for one-handed use, and with that blade length it seems sort of awkwardly proportioned for two handed. I'm leaning towards the Everest Katana, because from what I've seen on weights it's right around two pounds, which is pretty manageable. I wish some of these more obscure swords people keep mentioning would come up for sale again.

yeah thanks for showing me another sword i want, the himalayan imports Manjushree

what a beauty

you just HAD to bring up the Manjushree. I hate myself for being away from collecting when those were around.

I suspect from these comments that the style of use would be more like a heavy dao, or another sword designed for use with momentum. If your idea of a one hand sword is a rapier, or a wakizashi, then you may be better off with something else. If your idea of a one hand weapon is more like an axe or hawk or khuk, then it might work fine for you.

DannyinJapan talked about the short Tibetan sword as being a perfect blade for the martial mindset for which he had trained. Something along the line of moving and letting the blade do the work. The balance and weight of the sword would position itself where it needed to be. Very interesting school of thought that still causes my feeble brain to stretch at the seams:D

Oh and you guys owe yourself a Manjushree if they ever come back into production. Himalayan Gladius. Laser-straight blade, perfect thrusting tip, well turned steel cross guard, and a really cool carved dragon encircling the grip. Plus, the wooden pommel balances the sword like a dream. You don't even know it's there. If feels way lighter than it is. I took it to some coconuts a couple years back, and it made a ridiculous mess of them. Obviously, it would split them just fine with a hacking slash. What blew my mind was was how a well placed trust with the tip carried the mass forward causing them to literally explode on contact!
