The wife and I are thinking about taking Roadrunner up on their digital cable, internet and phone, but we don't want to switch our phone number. Do we need to if we sign up with them?

Thanks!

I'd check with your cable co to be sure ;) , but around here you keep your same number. One thing you need to be aware of, if you aren't already, is that if you have a power outage you have no phone. This may or may not be a major issue to you if you also have a cell phone. HTH

I have Optimum Voice and I did need to change my phone number. It wasn't that much of a big deal. Optimum Voice has a service where if someone calls your old number they inform them of the new number. The money I saved far outweighed the desire to keep my old number. I'm saving on average of $56 per month over my old service. I was actually glad to get rid of my old number due to the amount of telemarketers calling. I haven't had one telemarketer call since I got Optimum Voice.

I've had phone service from the cable company, Comcast, for years. Works great. Costs less. And the customer service is not as bad as Verizon.

I was actually the first customer in Sherwood, Oregon hooked up for it.

I did not change my phone number.

Look at your phone bill and see if you're paying a "number portability tax." If so, then you can change carriers and keep your number.

I use RoadRunner for my high-speed internet service but have resisted going to the full package, including digital phone service. As others have already posted, if you get a power outage or your ISP goes down, you have no phone service. My son in Boulder, CO tried another carrier and terminated service after a few weeks. The price was right but the service turned out to be pretty poor. The quality of the connections is sometimes also affected by the handset unit you use.

Good luck!

Comcast has phone service during power outages. Everything is battery backed-up. In fact, the first time they tried to install my old house, it wouldn't work because they'd got a bad battery for the box that goes out on the pole. They came back the next day with a new battery and everything works. The point is that they have batteries backing up all the equipment on the network. According to the guy I spoke to when they did the install, the battery will give four to eight hours.

We had a massive power failure in Sherwood just a few weeks ago that darkened half the town. The borderline was my street. I and everyone north of me lost power. My neighbors across the street and everyone else still had lights on. Bummer. It took 'em a couple of hours to get it fixed too. Anyway, my Comcast digital cable phone worked fine to call PGE and let them know.

My wife and I (and our teenage daughter :( :( :( ) all have cell phones, so phone outages aren't a cause for concern.

I'm looking to get back to a dependable service. My Yahoo DSL has been dropping out about every 1/2 hour for 5-10 minutes at a time. The Roadrunner package of phone/internet/TV is $15-20 cheaper per month, too.

Thanks all!

I've been with Vonage's $25 Unlimited (local, long distance, voicemail, call waiting, etc...) plan for the last 6 months or so. No problems at all. I was paying $83+ for the same service with BellSouth, who keeps sending me offers to come back for a mere $60 or so. No thanks. Everybody in the family has cell phones with excellent coverage, so a power outage isn't much of a concern. As a matter of fact, with Vonage we set up the account online to have all of our home calls forwarded to my wife's cell phone in the case of a service interruption, so we never miss a call, even if the power, cable, or Vonage service is out. We were also able to keep our old phone number.

Just remember that this is a fairly new technology, so there are inevitably going to be some snags along the way, and most digital phone companies are growing faster than their customer service departments can handle.
