Anyone have experience modding 2x42 to fit 2x72 belts?

Heya,

I got myself a 2x42 until I can magically get enough cash for a real grinder. I'd like to be able to run 2x72 belts for the longer life and availability. I've come across two different mods that people have made with some success:

http://knifedogs.com/showthread.php...x72-Conversion&highlight=craftsman+conversion

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1121001-Super-basic-2x42-to-2x72-conversion

I was wondering if anybody else had experience with this. I'm on the fence about which approach to take; I'm afraid adding a wheel will screw with tracking, but I'd also be able to run 42" belts if need be.

Thanks for the input!

I have done the 2nd conversion without the 3rd wheel. The flaw with that design is that the distance between the two wheels is so long that the belt can and sometimes does sway from side to side if you apply uneven pressure. It's not that big of deal, but it is a deal. Also, with this two wheel design, sparks and dust fling around the top wheel onto your head. No bueno!

Although it isn't perfect, it is still much better than using the 2x42" belts. But I mainly like mine so much because it is now being powered by a 3/4 HP motor rather than the stock 1/3 hp motor.

Thanks for the tips. I think I'll end up adding the third wheel. Now I just need to find one with bearings that will handle the rpms and attach it so it won't interfere with tracking.

Welp, I went ahead and did the same mod as you, only one problem.
I just went to reattach the platen and realized that I had made the cut between the two mounting holes. Gotta work around that somehow.
