Anyone have experience with F. Perrin knives (Military, PPF, Heron)

I am interested in buying a few (more) Perrin knives but I am not sure what type.

I was looking at the Military bowie (normal or XL)

OR

PPF (normal or Large)

Does anyone have any experience with these knives? I checked out a few Youtube clips but that didn´t really help. Both of them seemed very nice. The XL Military seemed to be a nice outdoor knife leaning to be more of a chopper while the "normal" Military seemed easier to carry and could work in a urban setting. The Large PPF is a unknown to me, it doesn´t seem to be that good as a chopper (couldn´t find any Youtube clips on that one). The normal PPF seems even better suited in a urban setting in a self defense type of role.

I have four knives to choose from and I am not sure which one to go for. It would be great to hear some opinions from people that have handled these.

I am also very interested in the Heron as a really low-profile EDC. Is it more of an evolved La Griffe or is it really something new? I saw a clip where Perrin showed all the different ways you can cut with it and to say the least - I am impressed. I think it is the same type of feeling as when I "discovered" the La Griffe. Anyone out there that have handled or used one?

Thanks.

PS. I already own two Spyderco Perrin bowies and two neck knife bowies... and an Emerson La Griffe. So I do have some kind of experience with Perrins stuff. Time to move up to the customs...

Many of my designs were influenced by Perrin. Good stuff.

I have Perrin designs both custom and mid-tech. Perrin is a true artist as well as being just an overall passionate individual. He is also a BF user, so you might actually have the honor of hearing from the man himself at some point.

I love everything Mr Perrin has designed, often carried a shark behind my belt buckle when working security. I also have a handmade perrin bowie that is probably my favorite piece in my entire collection. The piece just feels alive in my hand and the kydex is spot on. this is what it looks like : http://www.edcknives.com/products/Perrin-%2d-Clip-Point-Bowie.html

i don't personally have the PPF or military bowie but based on the bowie I do have I/ think your not really going to find a better knife anywhere. So the PPF would most likely be best for your urban self defense needs and the big military bowie for your outdoors just choose the one you spend more time doing, more than likely urban. Some things may be more even or more polished but I have never had a knife with near the personality of a Perrin. If they speak to you then just pull the trigger and don't look back.

The heron appears to be a new knife of his midtech/production line. He also makes an impact device out of titanium called the heron. Once you get a custom in hand you will know what I am talking about, real working tools. The only company i feel near the same way about is Grayman knives.

Thanks for the input. Now I am gravitating towards the "normal" sized knives. I would be carrying it on a regular basis in a urban setting. The bowie you have seems to fit in between the military and the PPF. Clever choice.

I hope someone else chimes in that have used the military and/or the PPF.

I have the LaGriffe and the Street Beat, and like them both. I like Perrin's designs, he really thinks things like concealment and ergos/balance through. Much of his stuff is really tailored to last ditch weapons and knife fighting, prolly not the best choices for EDC general use, though the bowies look a bit more general purpose.

Update:

I went with the normal sized PPF (5.5 inch black blade).

Well, it was just what I needed. Nice wide blade and very ergonomic grip. More of a "fighter" than the Military but still with a good edge for EDC chores that may need a wee bit larger blade than my PPT or neck bowie.

If anyone else out there is hesitating - don´t. It is a well balanced knife with great ergonomics.

I was looking at a couple of his knives on Arizona Custom Knives over the weekend. They seem to have great ergos but are very roughly finished. How about some pitchers of your new one?

Glad your happy with your purchase. I really wish Perrin got the publicity of some of the bigger names, that way they would be more widely available.

My Perrin PPF.

I like variety and if I compare this knife to my Mad Dog Voodoo hound and Hossom Retribution I would say that the MD is more of a soldiers tool/weapon in a cold climate, the Hossom is more of a soldiers tool in a hot climate and my Perrin is the knife I would carry anytime anywhere in civilian clothes.

The sheaths for these knives portray this very well. All of them has excellent sheaths for different types of carry. My MD on a belt (ATAK type sheath), the Hossom on a belt or on a vest (survival sheath systems belt sheath), the Perrin IWB (sheath with a cord). All of them are made of kydex.

I am not a soldier but I do like knives so I buy what I like. :D
