I was getting ready to use one of the Buck 501's in my inventory and think it may be a darn old one and I have the paperwork and box. I don't collect them and it makes no differerence to me if I use a new or an old one. Anyway, the paperwork in the box is dated 4-4-72 and here are a few pictures.

The question I have is should I go ahead and use it or would a collector be heartbroken if I changed the scales over to stone?

I don't really collect them but I do have several including two like yours. If I were you, I'd hang on to that one and use a new one instead for mods. That one has the old Buck tang stamp and it has micarta handles. To me, it would be more valuable as is.

Ouucchhh!! That's a hard one. I'd say don't use it. Try to trade it for another that you can use and some consideration. Just my opinion. Heck what would you trade it for?

Redrummd,Your 501 is not the first issue. But a early one.The first ones had an exposed
rocker rivet. That model came out around 1975.Nice knife, do what you wish and you do nice work. Thanks for posting the pictures.DM

I've accumulated a few of the 500 series over the years. I would suggest using a different one for your project. That one looks like a nice specimen.

I'd be more than happy to send you a new one to use in exchange for that one.;)

There are plenty of the newer ones around, but there more than likely won't be anymore like yours.

I just realized that the above didn't sound too good. I meant to say that it would be more valuable than a new one to use, not that it would be more valuable than one you rehandled in stone.

Here's the reason I know that. I've had one of them for a while, but I guess I never took any pictures of it until now. If I remember correctly, it's Leopard Jasper.

Wow,

That is one of my very early knives, number 77, and it is Leopard Skin Jasper from Mexico. My fit and finish is at least a wee bit better now.

Red, Do you number all your customs?? That Jasper is rich!! The more you look...

bucksway -

Yes, each has a number and I maintian a photo file copy picture of each one with a backup thumb drive and CD's in a fire safe to help ensure my records do not get compromised. I update to a CD with each group of 100 and to the thumb drive with each group of 20 so even if my computer is stolen I should only lose records on 20 or less knives.
