I'm thinking of getting some fishing gear and wondered if anyone could give their opinions...

I've been saving up to buy a new fishing reel...Shimano Calcutta Conquest 201...
Just wondered if anyone here had any experience with these line of reels...

Shimano belongs on a bike, not on a fishing reel. I used Shimano for years before I wised up after repeated failures of their reels. I just got myself a new Penn 4600L Live-Liner. This, mated with my G. Loomis Drop-Shot pole, will make a killer bass rig this season. Do your self a favor and get a Penn. You'll be thanking me come Spring.

I do love those Penn spinning reels...especially the spinfishers...thing is i want a new multiplier/baitcaster...so are there any good ones from Penn?

Call me an old fart. I use a couple of refurbished Mitchell 300 spinning reels. I've managed to bust every modern reel I've used, but can't seem to kill the old 300s. The 300s may not be as silky smooth as the newer bearing reels, but I've used them for everything from 12inch perch to 35inch striper.

I have never had any problems with Shimano reels, other than they cost a lot. Daiwa makes good reels. Never tried a Penn for some reason. Maybe I should? I do mainly spinning stuff, as I have never gotten the hang of a baitcaster(at least not anywhere except a very open area). With a spinning reel, I am confident enough to flip my lure anywhere. With a baitcaster, who knows where that lure is going to end up? :)

You guys are killing me - get the Bass Pro Shops branded goods! (I work for BPS. :D )

Point44 -- are you going for saltwater or freshwater? I noticed that you're from the UK. Are you going to fish for carp or musky?

Buzzbait -- I picked up one o' them revised 300s a year ago and pretty suprised with them. Pretty damn rugged for their price.

Unfortunately the only baitcasters that Penn makes are for deep sea and surf fishing. I own 2 Internationals that I use for that purpose. But as far as baitcasters for freshwater go I would look into the Abu Garcia Torno Series of reels. I use a T3006HS as my baitcasting reel. This thing is smooth and I have yet to get the dreaded birds nest.

Burchtree...i'm not interested in carp fishing...especially in the UK...they make it just too complicated....13 feet rods, all sorts of groundbait and stuff like that...

I just wanna fish for pike using lures...no deadbait 'cos i'm too lazy to find 'em...i don't like complicated fishing...

I have a Shimano Lever Drag TLD 15 and I love it. Also have Daiwa Sealines, and Penn reels, but for the big fish, it's hard to beat the Shimano.
