i have a knife that id like to change into something different, specifically a busse xxxl NICK that id like to turn into a sort of satin jack variant.
the modification would require that the edge be removed about 1/2" into the blade, that the primary grind be raised up on the knife, and that the tip be made into a clip point. id also like to have the handles ground down near the pinky and ring finger area to make for a more comfortable and stable handle shape (like on the busse basic series).

i have no idea how much such a modification would cost, or if anyone on bladeforum does such modifications.
so, how much do you think such a mod would cost? are there any makers who take on projects like this one?

(i know that it would void the original warrantee, and that i would be responsible for the knife were it to break, or be broken/damaged)

Perhaps have someone here just make the knife you want(?). Keep the original. Not me though.

In case you haven't thought of this, it might well be cheaper to buy the knife you want, instead of having one modified into something else.

The cost could well be more than having one made from scratch, as Roger mentioned above.

Just the sheath for the modified knife is going to run you $35-75, depending on the maker, and I won't even go into the price to modify the knife.

thanks for your responses :)

i can make sheaths, so thats not a problem, i actually made the one thats in the picture.

the reason i want it modified from this specific knife, is that its made of infi, and there isnt another model made by busse combat that could be modified into a knife i want (they all have large choils, or arent big enough).

to get a custom from scratch knife made like the one below from busse combat out of infi, would cost at bare minimum 750$, and could range itself up to 1,500+ depending on how many features i wanted added onto it. and the wait time would be anywhere from 2 years, to 6+ depending on how things went. i fear that going through the custom shop for the modification process would cost me anywhere from 450-1,000+ anyways, and take a year and a half+.

i know it sounds stupid, but if i wanted the knife made out of another steel, i would probably make it myself, out of a2 or s7. i can understand why it would be a huge undertaking to remake the knife out of already hardened steel without overheating it/taking a huge amount of time to keep it cool.

i figure if i dont ask, i'll never know. sorry if it was a poorly worded or just plain out of the question inquiry. if nothing else, if i ever get a grinder i can do the work myself.

Do they sell INFI for other makers to use? Most makers wouldn't charge nearly that much for a knife like that, especially if you provide the steel. If they don't like to share their steel though, then I guess that won't work.

busse combat owns the patent to infi, wich is their proprietary steel, as well as the heat treat method (transversal wave something or other). its like a better a2 with high mealiability at high hardness. a lot of research and developement time and money went into it, and its one of the things that makes busse combat what it is. its what im looking for in my fixed blade carry, and ive been going though the rounds of busse's 4-7" line up past to present. what ive found is that i need at least 5", and i dont like choils, wich is why i wanted to mod the xxxl nick to get the knife i want out of it, but ive come to the conclusion that everyone would pretty much look down on me for changing one of the only 106 xxxl nicks out there without giong through the custom shop to do it.

im gonna try out the satin jack and see if i can work past my sheer hatred for finger choils. i will probably need the handle modded though.

as to the high cost of busse costoms, they have a full wait list that keeps their wait time into the years area, and you cant get infi anywhere else. if i was going to be relying on the knife daily to save my life, it would be well worth the money, but as it is i feel that i can find other infi venues to get what i need/want without going the full custom route....

thanks for the offers on moding the knife to those who sent them
