Anyone here ever "RENT" a knife before?

What I end up doing sometimes, when it comes time for me to purchase a new knife for the collection, I will buy the knife knowing that if I do not like it and don't want to make it a keeper, I will sell it very soon thereafter.

So in turn, I sell the knife "like new", for a decent price for the next owner, and if I take any loss of $$$ since my initial purchase I consider it like a "RENTAL" fee.

Sometimes I will "rent" a knife and keep it forever, and other times it goes straight back to sale for others to buy so I can get my money back out of it.

I don't think there are any retail knife stores around here to fondle them before purchase, so each new knife is almost a gamble to see if I will like it in person.

Anyone else relate to this?

I always think about it...I want to buy a custom just to hold it and then sell it again later just so I can have it for a while but I know I will probably keep it so I'd be toast haha

I do that all the time... I only retained 3 or 4 of the probably 3 or 4 dozen knives I've bought in the last two years. Makes it easy to buy something new when you've just sold something.

In fact, I just sold 2... and bought 3.. :p

Hmm I usually use knife to the point that no one would want to buy them.

Not that they're abused, But I always re profile a wicked sharp bevel.

I have a "knife budget". I will only hold onto knifes that add up to X amount. Whether that's 10 knives or 2, I buy and sell them whenever something new comes out, keeping my favorites and selling the ones that just didn't impress me. This keeps my hobby in check.

That's how I get 90% of my knives. I wait until I find a really good deal, and if it doesn't turn out to be something I want or will carry, I resell it typically at a slight profit. 80% never see pocket time - I have handled enough knives at this point that I can identify dealbreakers in about 5 minutes of handling time.

Also, that slight profit (usually about 5 bucks after shipping) slowly expands my knife budget. Trades are a good way to go too - slight value differences are usually overlooked, allowing one to trade up if you're patient.

No, I've never "rented" a knife, or a fork or a spoon. I didn't know they even offered knife rentals or leases. Sounds like some shit off of Seinfeld.

That is exactly what I'm doing with a Will moon mk7. I'll hold it, flip it once or twice, and then immediately put it back in the case and sell it. Like hell am I going to carry or keep a $1300 knife...

All of mine are "long term rentals" so far! The only exception is trading a sprint run brown PM2 for a user ZT 0500 MUDD, and though I wish I could have kept the PM2 as well, I am glad I did the trade.

No, but I have bought a knife locally at a big box retailer and paying full price while waiting on the same knife to arrive that I've purchased online, knowing I'm going to return it. I just cannot wait sometimes. That's only happened twice though.

Once a knife hits the door here, it seems to be like the Eagles song "Hotel California."

They can check out anytime they like, but they can never leave!

I never "rent"
If I get a knife that doesn't live up to expectations I use it more often and don't fret when it gets banged up. It gives the other users a little more time to look good before its's their turn.

Although I could get by with only a small EDC and a medium sized knife, my collection so far have all been keepers.
