Anyone here know Chevy Silverado stereos?

Ok...I have 1999 Chevy Silverado Z-71 and I am having a stereo issue, or multiple issues, I can't tell.

About 3 months ago the stereo began cutting out intermittently. It would stop producing sound for a few days at a time, but it would still light up, accept CD's, change stations, etc. This is the model with the detached CD unit if that makes a difference.

Today, I replaced the head unit and had the same problem. All power, but no sound. :mad:I wonder if it is the speakers, but they produce solid sound when I can actually get sound. Is there some sort of in-line amp or something that I am missing?

I am out of ideas, y'all. Can anyone help? Truckforums.com has not been much help, so I am checking here.

Thanks

I would take the headunit back out and while it is out plug a speaker that you know works into the outputs of the headunit. If there is sound coming out of the speaker than you know that it is either the installed speakers or something along the way to the speaker (loose connection or maybe inline amp). The fact that they are cutting in and out makes me think that it could be a connection at the speakers or in the back of the unit. I assume you had to use a converter in the back of the HU to plug up your new aftermarket one, maybe try re-connecting that.

Stock speakers and head unit?
I'm assuming it's a Bose system (complete proprietary garbage that's not do it yourself friendly...) so each speaker is probably at one ohm and powered by an individual amp per speaker. So if it's all the speakers being intermittent at the same time then it's probably a head unit issue and not speaker/amp issues.
See if it works with radio, CD, and cassette, if it has issues with all three I'm thinking the power or ground potentially.
If radio doesn't work but CD and cassette do I'm guessing it's the antenna.
I'd also recommend registering at a car audio site because they will know a lot more than any of us. Diyma.com is a good one and has a forum dedicated to dumb questions" to help people with questions like this.
