Has anyone here used a Scrapyard Dogfather? Interested to here impressions from people that have taken theirs out and beat on it.

cant comment on the dogfather, as i dont own one, but i can comment on the SY SOD. Brutally tough knife , built to take abuse. From what i've seen form my feller DAWGS over at Scrapyard, the Dogfather is just as tough.

Sure. It's a marine-enviornment go-to beater.

I used to use a HI AK Bowie, but carbon rusts before the day is done.

Totally happy with the DF.

Similar to Bushman5, I own a SOD and have whacked away at the thing without any problems. It takes a really fine edge, I convexed mine quite aggressively and I've yet to roll any part of the edge.

I have one too and absolutely love it. Takes and keeps a good edge... tough as nails!
Love the handle. Love the balance.
All around excellent.

I'll echo the sentiments that it takes a great edge. If you need a BIG knife, it is a really good one to have. It's in my hunting bag for clearing shooting lanes. Much faster than using a saw, and more versital than a pair of shears.

Ok, anybody who knows me knows I love Scrap Yard so I gotta chime in.

First of all there are two DogFathers (DF), theres the DFCG and DFLE. The DFCG has a saber grind and is coated and the DFLE has a full height grind and has a satin finish. From the factory, the DFLE is lighter and has a better cutting edge, but the DFCG is heavier and better for chopping. Give the DFCG a nice full convex edge and it's a chopping machine.

Ban's fully convexed DFCG.

Compared to the heavier Busse's, the DF will almost perform as well.

First two quick chops and pieces of 2x4 already in the air.

The res-c handles are very comfortable and absorb some of the shock under heavy chopping. SR-77 steel is pretty malleable stuff so you can take the edge thinner then the factory edge and it won't likely chip. Under heavy chopping, I was only able to get small rolls, which is easily fixed.

Very tough lateral strength as well as edge.

And it can get scary sharp. Dumpster Mutt CG, smaller knife, same steel. Factory vs. Ban's mod.

If you are looking for a good camp knife and like the DF, check out the Son of DogFather (SOD), great, more compact, alternative to the DF.

Thanks for the photos. Currently I'm kind of torn between a SOD or DF. I find the size of the SOD useful (Own an RD7 and RAT7), but the DF's extra chopping power and reach could come in handy frequently. Probably going to go with a DF. I like big knives :D

I love my DF...one of my Favorites from Scrapyard....It is a beast of a chopper yet very light and quick in hand usage compared to other large knives....I would never sale my DF,I highly suggest picking one up...Tough blade, comfy handle and can be brought up to a razor sharp edge with great edge retension...

Has anyone compared the DF with a Battle Rat? I know the DF is more blade heavy, but how do they compare in use, edge retention, etc?

I have a Dogfather LE. It's a nice chopper with the factory edge (but in my opinion would surely benefit greatly from edge modding)

My experience has been that the resiprene handle absorbs chop "recoil" quite well but the handle is a little small and not quite shaped right for my hands. Not that it's bad by any means!

The factory edge is at about 45 degrees inclusive making it robust but not a top performance chopper. I have not done any mods to mine but I assume edge convexing would enhance the performance. So would a slightly lower edge angle (30 - 40). Almost all big chopping knives I have tried with around 45 degree edge angle perform similar with boreal wood, they don't bite well on harder higher density woods but mostly crush wood fiber and have a higher tendency to glance if careless.

It's not much of a fuzzie maker. But....Scrapyard probably didn't mean it to either...

I would prefer a slightly shorter but wider blade for better handling qualities and the handle could be more optimized for chopping :)

...Which brings me to SOD. It's a great balanced very efficient heavy duty blade! Probably one of Scrapyard's finest designs!

You can't right now. They have short production runs. If you want to get one you need to look at the secondary market, pr wait until they Re-release it .. if they do.

Pulled right off the Scrap Yard forums:

How do I get a Scrap Yard knife?

On 2008-09-24 Dumpster Dan made a major change to the way you can buy knives at the Yard (http://www.scrapyardknives.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=Knives&Number=213988). Scrap Yard Knives will now take orders on 1 or 2 models for approx. 4-6 weeks (depending on the model) and will then discontinue that offer. NO additional orders will be accepted until those models come back around in the model rotation. It could be 2 to 3 years before those models are made available again. This approach allows the customer a better chance of getting in on a model offering while allowing us to batch process or group build knives. This, in turn, assists us in keeping a lower cost of production, while ensuring high quality bladeware and the high performance that has become the hallmark of Scrap Yard Knives.

So get on over to http://shop.scrapyardknives.com/main.sc and get your fill of Scrap Yard goodness!

For those curious here is the old process:
The way Scrap Yard Works is as follows. Dan announces a new blade & then later on announces the release date. A batch of blades are manufactured and made available on the release date. Once they are sold out, we sit back and wait for the next release. Your best bet is to visit the forum once in a while to check and see when the next blade is due to be released. You want to be around at the release time as Scrap Yard blades have a history of selling out at a high rate of speed.

However it never hurts to check out the Scrap Yard store at http://shop.scrapyardknives.com/main.sc. You never know what you might find there! Plus you can score a bunch of schwag!

When is the next release?

Keep an eye at the store http://shop.scrapyardknives.com/main.sc and on the forums. Announcements for new models will normally be pinned to the top.

Where can I get old models of knives

There is a busy secondary market. The two main options are the exchange forums over on www.bladeforums.com and the Busse Kin Exchange at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bussekinexchange/
Please keep in mind that NEITHER source is endorsed by Scrap Yard knives. Links are provided for your convenience only.

Come stop by the Scrap Yard forum, everyone's really cool and helpful. The next release coming soon is the Scrapper 5, pictures of it have not been released yet.
