I'm thinking of dumping my Norton for AVG. Good idea or not?

Thanks

I use Avast, the latest home version, and have been for about three years.

I've got an older PC running a much-upgraded version of Windows '98, and found Symantec's NAV to be THE program on the box that caused MOST of my memory and freezing issues.

Since using AVG MOST of my freezing problems have cleared up and think highly of the program. I'm set to received automatic updates and think highly of the product.

Everyone at my work uses AVG and we have all been pleased with it. I personally hate norton.

norton is the biggest memory hog program around. i ran it for about a year until i found out it was the cause of my computer being slow. i used to use avg until it let a few nasty things through. i switched to avast and have been using it ever since. my operating system is 6 years old and avast has kept it clean along with running dr web's cureit just to make sure.

I use Zone Alarm.
Like most people, a few years ago I'd had quite enough of Norton to never ever want to install it on anything again. Mcafee went much the same way, though a bit later than Norton.

I use the free version of AVG.
My machine runs much faster than Norton, and AVG stops a lot of things that Norton was letting get by. IMO it's a VERY good move from Norton.

AVG, I used the free version for years on the old PC, then upgraded to a paid AVG subscription. Works great, updates and runs scans in the background. Recommended.

Ditto. AVG is good. Its free, it works, it causes no problems, and updates automatically.

I've tried several virus programs over the years. The best I can come up with is a combo of AVG Free and Zone Alarm. They do not have issues with each other, and if I do my part, the PC is happy.

I forgot how fast my computer was until i finally let my norton subscription expire and i got AVG. My computer runs like the wind again!!! Try it! Youll like it!,,,VWB.

Great idea! I've been running a paid version of AVG for quite awhile now and I really like it*....
*Except for the avgrsx.exe file using up so much of my CPU at times. But it doesn't usually slow me down for very long although it seems to be at the times when I don't want it too the most but I've heard there's an update coming that's supposed to fix that, helluvait is not everyone has the problem. ;)
But even at that it's still the best and fastest AV program I've ever had.
I tried both the Avast and Avira that are also popular free AV programs and I didn't like their formats at all *Especially* after using AVG.:grumpy:

In addition I also use Comodo Firewall, Comodo Memory Guardian, and Comodo BOClean, all free downloads, that along with AVG has kept me pretty worry free, again for quite some time.:D
I also use Sunbelt CounterSpy that loads on startup along with the above.

I have a few I run only on command such as Spybot S&D, SuperAntiSpyware, and a neat little defragger, IObit SmartDefrag 3.3 version that's still in Beta but up to 5.* and I haven't had a minutes trouble with it.
It's nice that it defrags your PC in a fraction of the time that Winders program uses!

There's also a few I'm kicking around to see if I like them well enough to keep....
AutoRun, which is a program that you can use to keep track of what you have on Startup, which shows much more than anything else I've seen, also lets you control several functions if you want....
Process Explorer that takes the place of the Window's Task Manager *and* explains what all the processes running really are along with the running graph(s).
Right now with 40 Processes running my PF Usage is 674 MB and my CPU at the moment is 8% running up to 22%. I only have 512 MB of memory.;)

Edit:
Comodo is also working on a free AV program that's still in Beta that I will probably try when it comes out of Beta. I would've already tried it if I knew more about viruses and such but after having to reinstall my OS once long ago I don't want to take a chance and have to do it again just because I got overly anxious. ;) :(

I'm running an ancient machine from around 1998 and i've always used norton, never had any problems with it and my machine is incredibly fast for it's age. I also run the Trend Micro free housecall every once in awhile just to be sure i'm getting rid of everything, but it usually only finds tracking cookies.

I tried AVG, avast and some others and found them to miss quite a bit, i didnt realize what they'd missed until i ran the housecall.

But is that with an old OS and a correspondingly old version of Norton?

The best anti-virus software in the world is just to use Mac OS X!

Back before OS X came out (several years now) there were a few viruses that could infect Mac OS 9 and prior versions. All those went away when the Unix based OS X came out. A couple years later, Apple put a free version of virus software on their website for .mac members. I downloaded and installed it but it only last a few months on my G5. What was the point? There still wasn't a single case of an OS X virus "in the wild" so it was just adding something else to active memory. Something else to update and possibly troubleshoot.

There have been rumors several times about a "coming OS X virus" but it never seems to come to anything. I haven't had any sort of anti-virus software on my Mac for at least three years. Imagine how much time and energy Windows people expend worrying about this stuff. I know what I'm talking about. I've made my living as a computer tech working on corporate Windows boxes since the early 90's! If I spend all day trying to clean and repair Windows boxes, it is like a breath of straight oxygen when I come home and start using my Mac!!

I put AVG on my daughter's new laptop and it's working great. I bought the version that also includes anti-spyware.
