Hello,

I built a hyradaulic press over a year ago and have not been able to get use out of it. It is currently for sale, but I would also like to consider getting some lessons on how to make a damascus billet before I let it go. I live near Fayetteville NC and will be dedicating some more time at making a successful damascus billet.

hey bro

What tonnage ya got going with that press ??

what dies to you have?

you need flattening dies and drawing dies to do a Damascus billet IIRC

I made both flattening and drawing dies. I have the press set to to about 22 pound based on the psi.

22 pounds???? do you mean 22 tons?
The ram speed is what is most important. Give us a photo and the pump size, motor size, cylinder size, etc.

Hey bro...

U mean 22 tons of pressure? Your gonna need around 30 ton or so with the thicker billets IIRC

But

Once you get the billet doneup and up to temp and fluxed u use the flattening dies to start it out and and work your way down the billet using light presses to get it all smooshed

Pop in the drawing dies once you get her smashed up good

Just takes a bit of practice from what I has researched, I do plan on making my own press in the near future so a few pics would be awesome

John,

PM me a time and day that would be good for you and I'll give you a call and answer anything you need to know. I'd not near as tough to do as you think. Take a look at my website first to get some of the basic info and I can talk you through some of the ins and outs of forging with a press.

20 tons is enough! The extra tonnage comes in when you are flattening already thin billets (like going from 1/2" to 3/8") , in my experience.

Loads of clips of youtube of welding on presses.

The trick to welding is good billet prep, and good (lotsa) heat !
