saw 2 from the 60's in my aunts garage. came home and had to get one. now i have a 50cc friction drive on a surly 1x1. would like to upgrade to a belt drive next summer. anyone else into motorbikin' ?

There are some local guys who ride them. I am resisting because I need the exercise, but ... boy, they look like fun.

I'm in the market for my first Harley Davidson this summer? Otherwise, a bad ass Segway might be sweet too...

I never saw one or rode one, but I saw some pictures once, and I thought about it for a while...

It looks like a lot of fun, but I'm guessing that you really don't want to ever go too fast. With those thin tires and no suspension, traction is always going to be at a premium. But so long as you stay within realistic bicycle speeds, it ought to be just fine.

Got any pics of your current ride?

Here's a nice website and dedicated forum; lots of good info here:

I have a 2-stroke engine I pulled out of an old snowblower with the intention of putting it in a bike. It's a bit large at 104 cc, might be a bit much... Haven't quite worked out the mounting technique yet. Shaft takes a standard centrifugal clutch.

The reviews of the mostly-Chinese motor kits are iffy, some are fine, some cause all sorts of problems. Quality control appears to be an issue.
Still kicking the idea around.

if you are looking for a friction drive check out Staton-Inc.com web page....2 and 4 stroke models, typically Subaru and Honda centrifugal clutch motors in the 32 to 50cc range.

I worked for GT Bikes for a while and they had a cool thing that was promptly dropped when the owners of Schwinn took over the company: an electric assist bike. It would sense the tension on the chain and apply a proportionate assist. It would kick in a lot going up a hill but not at all going down. It still made you pedal, but you could easily cruise at like 35mph or so.

i think theyre about perfect. im looking to switch to the Golden Eagle belt drive system next summer. the kit i ordered was from a sight called BMP then i bought the engine separate. i can get to cruising about 25mph with my motor that is not broken in all the way yet. hills tear me up though and need lots of assist. thinking ill change my gear so i get more torque for hills.

cougar- they are sweet! i havent had this much fun since learning to ride! i actually enjoy it more than a motorcycle.

jgon- check out motoredbikes.com for really really cool early indian and hd replicas!

mcjack- mine is a little scary at top speed i admit. i use 1.5" tires but will upgrade to balloons after christmas. the biggest things i think are big tires to ease the vibration and good brakes! dont just trust one coaster brake.

mwerner - the chinese engines do look iffy. they def have the best looks aesthetically but id rather throw a tanaka or tle43 mounted on a plate in the frame myself

les- im really interested in statons inside drive chain drive and have REALLY considered getting one. looks solid but the dropout area looks like a design cluster F to me.

electric bikes sound cool to me.. maybe as a gas assist. but they really dont have the range that a gas bike can.

glad to see others are interested as well!
