Picked up a Duncan Butterfly last week and trying to remember the few tricks I once knew.

Anyone else play with these?

Was wondering if yo-yos were ever going to come up here.

I've been collecting for about 10 years now and I'm up to around 300.
Mostly modern ones.
Things sure have changed since the days of the Duncan Butterfly.

I simply adore yo-yo's. The Smothers Bros. made for quite a yo-yo comeback in 1988. I still have a few Duncans and was lucky enough to get an autographed wooden Smothers yo-yo!!! I keep that one in the cabinet.

These modern day versions with the intricate workings are just not the same. It's sort of like the old saying "God created man, and Colt made them equal." If you want to do the tricks, you should have to work for it!

Well no argument there.
But no yo-yo is going to make someone a star if the skill isn't there.
The modern ones are sort of like training wheels.
They make learning a little more fruitful.

I just like the look and feel of the aluminum.

My wooden favorites include the SmoBro signature model and almost any of Tom Kuhn's creations.
That man could make art from Maple like nobody else.

I keep a yo-yo on my desk. It was a giveaway from a trade show. Almost evryone that comes into my office plays with it. Or attempts to.

If you really want to get into yoyos here are some sites to check out:

Yomania.com pretty good site active discussion forum, yoyo reviews, trick instructions and some vids.

Also try Daves Web Board at nmia.com/~whistler/wwwboard/index_big.htm
this is a good site it also has links to Daves World of Yoyo's as wellsas Dave's Skill Toys store.

another great discussion board is at

yoyoing.com/news

this is another pretty active sight with lots of links to various other trick sites and a web store called infinite illusions.

I myself have been into yoyos since I was in junior high. They're a great way to relax and have fun although they can be very stressfull when you can't learn the new trick you're trying. Of course practice pays off and it's quite rewarding in the end.

anyway I hope these sites help you out some...just be careful it can be addicting.

btw this is my first post, figures it'd be about yoyos and not knives

have fun

Jamie

Thanks for the great posts and links! Keep 'em coming!
Anyone have any books they would recommend?

Also, after a Duncan, what is the next step up?

After the Duncan I would recommend looking at either BC/What's Next for a wood yo-yo or YoYoJam for a plastic yo-yo.

BC/What's Next is the company that Tom Kuhn (father of the modern yo-yo) merged with and they're one of the few companies still making wood yo-yos.
YoYoJam is the new kid on the block but they make top quality plastic yo-yos, most with ball-bearing axles for a definite step-up from the Duncan.

A third choice might be a Pro-Yo from Playmaxx.
That one is a plastic yo-yo with a wooden axle.
You get the feel of a modern yo-yo with the play of traditional wood.

Of course Duncan still makes yo-yos but apart from their latest model, the Freehand, Duncan has been plagued with quality problems that make a recommendation pretty iffy.
Duncan has just acquired the Playmaxx product line so hopefully these issues will all resolve.

All of these can be found at the above links.
www.yoyodave.com is a sort of front door from which you can get to the discussion board, Daves on-line store, or even Dave's yo-yo museum.

Hell yeah love those things. my favorite would be either the Duncan professional or one of the Yomega's that don't auto return.

Hey, buy a balisong, the yo-yo of the knife world.

check out some stuff here, like his freestyle moves, or play any of the videos from the advanced section.

http://www.balisongxtreme.com

...damn the site seems to be down for now, anyway, you should still check it out sometime. The balisong forum here is great too. That's where I usually lurk.

Yeah Clay said his site was going to be down until he gets it switched to another provider.

If you like new extreme designs with space age materials and machining, check out www.customproducts-az.com they make awesome yo-yos. Great paintball products also. The paintball products is what led me to them, but I love yo-yos and that section of their site was even more impressive to me. Check them out and see for yourself. I think you will be impressed.

When folks ask what yo-yo to buy I usually answer BC Rainbows, Spintastics Terminators and Tornados, and the basic ProYo (like the Terminator).

My old boss Bunny Martin still does most of his shows with Rainbows.

Have Fun,

Brad

Man Bali tricks, yoyo tricks, zippo tricks they just keep piling up...I can't take it anymore.
